A question for Frankie Rider....

I just purchased a set of GTA style "cross-laced" black 16x8" wheels from Classic Industries. Very nice!

Since they only offer them with black-painted centers, how did you "prep" the wheels prior to shooting them with the original 52P-code gold paint?

Did you have them sandblasted to remove the black paint? If not, how did you prep them for painting?

Thanks.

I am thinking about ordering those wheels as well. And like you I will need to paint them gold in order to have a visually correct replacement.

I heard from Frankie that the correct gold wheel paint code is 52P. According to Frank, you can have a car paint shop mix this gold color for you and put it in aerosol cans for the aplication process if you plan on doing it yourself.

He never mentioned anything about prepping the black paint....but I think I will just get some car paint stripper to remove what I can of the black paint, apply the gold color, then apply some sort of clearcoat finish...

Hey, fellas..... don't strip off the black paint that comes on the wheels.

The friend who painted mine just scuffed the black up with sandpaper and scuff pads; basically, the black finish is used as a kind of primer coat for the gold paint. Just be sure to scuff inside each and every little crack and crevasse of the wheels to ensure good paint adhesion.

After you finsh applying the gold paint, follow with the clear and PRESTO! Brand new, factory correct GTA rims for a fraction of the cost....

These wheels are fantastic, and you will be well satisfied. Good luck with yours!

Thanks for the info! I'm glad to hear that I don't need to strip the black paint off the wheels.

Apone: If you decide on buying these wheels, act quickly because they told me that they usually sell out of them very quickly and then you'll have to wait "months" for them to come in again.

Classic Industries recently received a large shipment of these wheels a few weeks ago.
