Ok well I bought this 1992 Camaro RS heritage edition when I was almost 15. During the summer almost everyday I would ride up on my moped and check it out at Brown's Auto Sales in my hometown and bargain with the guy. He origanally wanted $2200 for it but I finally got him down to $1700 cash. But my dad and I knew that it needed a lot of work. We knew we were going to have to go through the whole car. I only bought the car because it sported the original heritage edition package (rpo z03) plus it had a z28 hood. And their was no body damage. Also their was absolutly no i mean no rust anywhere on that car. It wasn't even undercoated and having 179,120 miles on it, it just made no sense. So I eventually got a carfax report and found out that it was in Lake Forest, California until 2003, then moved to Ft. Wayne Indiana, then to Van Wert, Ohio (my hometown). The southern California climate really saved this car. Ok back to the car itself. Again it had 179,120 miles on it what can I say, the doors were saging, brakes were shot, the suspension was horibble and drifted everywhere on the road, tires were weathered and cracking, exhaust was falling apart, the wonderful L03 was running pretty well but was in a great need of being rebuilt and needed a lot more power, the tranny was a 1987 4.3 S10 transmission and you guessed it shot like everything else on the car. But the interior was pretty complete minus the shifter handle, floor mats, headliner. It also had like new 1994 Camaro seats in it with no rips, so I didn't have to worry about new seats.

So when I got the car home it sat in my garage for 3 months straight just waiting for me and my dad to work on it. So the first thing we started on was the drivetrain. So we had Rudy Matthews of Ohio City, Ohio rebuild the worn out old L03. When he took apart the engine it was in rather good shape. The interals showed minial wear but had a spun bearing and the crank was bad. So we sent the block to the local NAPA to do the machine work. We knew that the engine only put out 170hp at the flywheel so we decided that it defiantly needed a little more punch. So he installed a new Comp cam with .480 lift on the intake, .488 on the exhaust and a 212 duration. The comp cam is the CS XR258HR-12. The l03 heads were reworked and were mildly ported to accept the larger lift. We also installed comp cam springs.
We decided to keep the TB injection so we got the Edelbrock perfomer TBI intake. We installed MSD ingition, high volume oil pump, and a 3 inch catback pacesetter exhaust. I am installing headers this winter because he said he would rather break in the engine with the stock manifolds for the first few hundred miles and I have now fully broke in the engine so the headers are going on and maybe a tbi nitrous kit from Nitrous Works. I am probably missing something so if you have a question please ask me. Oh and I did have a custom chip made for it and it runs great from Brian at tbichips.com. Their is also no smog equipment on it.

The suspension was redone by my dad and I. We installed all new front end parts from PST suspesion, including KYB struts and shocks. We installed UMI lower control arms and panhard bar which are excellent quality. Brakes are stock but are brand new including new lines, calipars, pads, rotors, and the rear brakes had the drums resurfaced with new brake pads. I completely undercoated the car to keep it from rusting, even though it gets stored in the winter. We took out the rear end because the 2.73 non posi rear was not helping performance any. So we compltey rebuilt the rear end with new bushings and seals. Also with a Eaton Posi unit, and motive 3.73 gears. The wheels are 17 inch Corvette Z06 replica rims with low profile directional tires.

We had Bryan Spray at Superior Collision repaint it, which he did an excellent job at. I decided to clone it to a Z28. So I bought stainless steel exterior Z28 emblems. And a nos 1992 Z28 25th anniversary interior emblem. I got the spoiler off ebay. Also I bought a new 1992 Z28 grill. Byran also sprayed on the heritage stripes which look amazing.

Nice car. but i hope you can learn from theese mistakes.

1. rebuilding a 305, should have just gotten a 350, I got my 406 rebuilt with a trans for $750
2. Lo3 heads are junk, other heads are better way better

 

wow man u did a really excellent job on this car! did you do anything to the outside of the drums? im wondering how they look behind the Z06 wheels (i have drums too and im wondering how it will look with aftermarket wheels) All the car needs to completely set it off is some tint. that thing looks flawless. im glad to hear you undercoated it too. Nice choice on the 3.73's!

The car looks amazing, nice job saving another one! Can you get me a close up shot of your nose emblem? It looks like I bought those same emblems for my car but I haven't put them on yet because I need to get the new paint buffed still and I'm not 100% on the way it looks like the nose emblem will have to fit. I'm on the verge of just trying to resell these and getting a 4th gen nose emblem and leave the rest of the emblems off.

You can solve that by just getting some rear disks!

first of all the car looks great, gotta love a clean 92'. second of all, no one should ever be damned about what they do or dont rebuild or work on. its a known fact that 305's are slower than 350's and of course a 406, but that is beside the point. maybe he doesnt want a rocket to drive around in. 305's are fun. mine is. and guess what, it gets me everywhere i wanna go. school, work, downtown, across the state line..........with way more reliability than a 406 would . we got a guy in our club with a 35' ford that has a 3.8 t-bird v-6 from the late 90's in it. does it pass 10's? NO, but it is fun and cool. Hot rodders build bent 8's,straight 8's, any v-6 (and chevy 4 cylinders)

looking damn good if i must say ,The good thing is you have those wheels so if you ever want to do a c5 12.75 inch brake upgrade your brakes will fit under your wheels. The car looks great though .

I did my car, that's enought for me! Swapping the new rear end into my car was the easy part though. Getting it out of the donor car at a junk yard with no jacks, never having done it before, and then dragging it from the back of the junk yard on an old hood without damaging it was the fun part!

Hey thanks guys for the positive comments. And to rwdtech, I just painted the drums just regular black and they look really good. My front calipars are painted red and really stand out. But I think the red UMI lower control arms, which can be seen through the rims really compensates for not having rear disks. I will try to get some pictures of it when I put it in my heated garage tomorrow for winter storage.

 

Nice car I too got my first camaro when I was 15, but mine wasnt a heritage addition thugh it was a 92 to however, great job on bringing her back, and dont let anyone diss on the 305 to bad sure its not the fasted but itll last a long time

 

Yeah I know my 305 has some ***** to it. But I get a a lot of crap for it being a 305 though. But you know my car can take down rather stock 350 Iroc's anyday along with many Mustang 5.0's. After my installation of headers and a TBI nitrous system. My car will then be somewhere in the 13s in the quarter mile. I forgot to tell you guys that I do have a trans go shift kit in it, corvette servo, and a 3000rpm stall.

 

I don't know why anyone would give you a hard time about it only being a 305, especially since it's a first car, but at least it's faster than the V6 I have!

 

First of all, awesome job restoring that thing. Its awesome to see more Heritage Editions popping up on the boards...


Just a note however, Heritage Editions had body colored grills so technically the grill on your car should be red, not black. Honestly it probably looks better black, but if you were going for authenticity, red would be the way to go...

I love my '92, I've had it since my freshman year of college, and I can't wait to gut it down and bring it back to it's glory.

Do yourself a favor though and consider a nice set of springs to really set the car off. You're obviously not going with authenticity (considering the grill, emblems, spoiler and seats), so a nice 1-3" drop shouldn't be a bad deal.

Congratulations, especially on having the guts to work on the motor that YOU want to work on!

Your car just became my background. That is exactly how I want my RS to look. Are the black stripes painted on or are they decals?

 

The stripes were painted on because I could not find the original stripes except for the Year One stripes. But they were around 325.00 bucks, if i can remember right. So I just had them painted on for a little less.

 

Painted on looks better anyway and then there's no chance of them peeling off when they get old.

Can you get me some close up pictures of the front nose emblem? How does it fit? I have those same emblems (but in RS) and I don't know if I want to use them or not mainly because of the fitment of the nose emblem.
