Painting Stock Valve Covers?

I've got a set of centerbolt valve covers off of an 87 Camaro. What kind of paint do I need to get to make these good? I had a high temp spray paint, but it really didn't want to adhere to it. Didn't go on evenly and just generally looked ****ty. I had a friend with a set of nicely painted red ones, but the previous owner had done it.

So what do I look for tomorow? What type of paint sticks well to these and looks good? I want to make them blue gloss.

Try taking it to a body shop. I'm sure they'd paint it for pretty cheap. We use the same urethane paint on valve covers as the bodies, but these are on open-engined hotrods. Haven't had any heat-related problems, but man they look great!

Any decent brand paint should work well. Surface prep is key. Lightly sand them, degrease, prime them and paint. I prefer duplicolor ceramic engine enamels, as they retain their gloss longer in higher heat apps (warmer than valve covers should ever get)

It depends on what you want:

If you want them to be the same color of you car do the following:
1. Take them to a machine shop and have them hot tanked to get all the grease, paint, etc. off..
2. Then send them with about 400 grit sand paper, and after its smoothe progress to 600, then 800
3. Finally take them to a body shop and have them primed, sanded again, then painted to match you car. Then Enjoy! Just make sure that the shop uses high quality paint, such as PPG.

If you want them to be any other color, follow steps 1 and 2 above. For step three prime and paint with engine paint, I would recomend DupliColor, it's the best by far. Just make sure you lightly sand the primer before painting, use 600 or 800 grit paper.
