Warmer weather is coming! ZAINO time
Ok guys, I have used Meguire's products for years and have been happy with the typical shine. After seeing some of the cars pictured on this site, after Zaino has been used, I think I'm gonna give it a try. I need some help though. I used 3M Polishing compound on the entire car last summer. Do I still need to buy the claybar? My finish is smooth and I would assume that compounding would do the same as the clay bar. Second, will Zaino help a 15 year old factory finish? The car is still perfect except that is was painted in the LA factory in 87 with the crappy paint process. I have a lot of factory orange peel. I have been told by my body shop people to leave it alone and not color sand it. They said it's hard to tell how thick the clear is. The orange peel doesn't allow the car to really show off it's shine. Any help is appreciated and thanks for reading the long post!
You can see the lack of luster at my signature website. Another shot of it can be seen here. This is not a low quality picture producing that look.

I agree with your body shop, I would not color sand it. I am sure GM was not over generous with the clear coat.
Zaino will help reduce the orange peal but it will take several coats. It is so it easy to do you will not mind putting on many coats. I typically Zaino my car two times a month in the summer, I know that is over kill but I enjoy doing it.
As for the Clay Bar, if you feel any roughness in the finish the clay will help. All it is designed to do is remove the airborne contaminants that get embedded in your finish. Since you compounded your car and it sounds like it is always garaged I am not sure you need to clay it.

You could just try a little spot down low and see how it "feels" with the clay. That would answer your question better than anybody here could.
That is, unless you're asking to find out of you need to shell out the $20-some bucks for it in the first place... heh

this is zaino. they say it's the best stuff out there as far as cleaning and polishing products go. http://www.zainobros.com/
i have a question about zaino. they have like 4 different type polishes. if i were to buy the clay bar and use that, which polish should i get? i was thinking about the swirl mark and light scratch one. what do you think? what is each for?

I think what you saw was the product lineup for clear coat finishes and regular paint finishes. I would assume that you need to use the type formulated for your type of finish.
I just found out last week that my 86 442 has a regular paint finish and I have been treating it like a clear coat. One of the problems with this was, I used a polishing compound on the paint to remove swirls and small scratches. The car looked good when I was finished, but I think I might have exposed the underlying paint to the elements. I don't know what the results down the road will be.

Mequiars sucks! Atleast on my car! I used Mequiars wax and it only lasted a couple months! At the same time I waxed a little spot with Turtle Wax and six months later I can still tell where the turtle wax was at!
I think I'll try this Zaino stuff tho' and see how well it works out!

What you need;
Z1- Polish lock. This is used one or two times a year.
Z2 or Z3- If you have clear coat use Z2, if not use Z3.
That is all you must have.
Other good products.
Z5- This is for filling in fine scratches and swirl marks.
Z6- Gloss Enhancer. This is a detailing spray. Use VERY sparingly.
Z7- Car Wash.
Z16- Perfect tire gloss. I love this stuff!
Z18- Clay bar. Used to pull the contaminants out of your paint before you polish.

Does zaino work on lacquer? I painted my car myself with black lacquer (no, not krylon...) and I need to polish it. I have been using meguiars wax, but I agree that it sucks, because it doesnt last.
