Painting steps????

starting to prep for paint. I have new seals for the t tops, a few cans of primer and some tape.... I'm unsure what color i want to go with, prob gonna keep her red. i assume i should put the seals in after i prime and paint the rails and roof? i was gonna use a case of cans to paint but thinking of getting a gun? any good guns out there you guys use for a decent price?

Spend the extra $ and get a decent gun. A Sharp Colbalt is a decent gun for the price. I only use the can primer to cover metal to keep from rusting just until I can get it sanded down to metal and put some good primer on it. before the paint. Are you going to go with a base coat/clear coat? If so, then use a urethane primer/ hardener.

Are you planning on painting the whole car? If so, what klnd of paint do you plan on using? Many today use the 2 stage urethane. base coat /clear coat. If that's the case, then you'll need a urethane primer/hardnener.

If your not planning on painting the whole car anytime soon, and are just trying to stop the rust, until later on down the road then I guess using the spray can is better than just letting it rust away. In that case I guess the Rustolem is about the best to pick up.

Don't use spray can primer, it is lacquer and shrinks a lot when it dries. Sanding scratches that don't show up at the time of painting will show up soon after. It is better than no primer but that's about it. Definitely do not paint a car with cans. Cans are soft, low grade paint that has no hardener and no UV resistance. It will chip easy and fade very quickly. Also there is no way to get uniform film thickness when you are applying paint in a 1-2" wide fan instead of an 8-10" fan. Plus the atomization and fan width change as you empty the can since the pressure slowly drops.

Rustoleum is fish oil based. If you ever spray real auto paint over it it will probably make a mess.

Exactly, that is why you must sand all the can primer off before putting real primer on the car.
