Removing rear glass hatch and t-top(Positive look)

Has anyone ever done this. MY 92' camaro is equipped with t-tops and i've removed the back glass hatch, t-tops and lowered the windows. Sort of looks like a convertibal with a rollbar. And no i havent gotten pulled over by the cops. And im well aware what might happen if i get into a collision. But, gotta luv it when ur cruising and girls out in the back seat scared $hitless when your going 80mph on the highway. Even though its dangerous and hazardous i highly recommend it for the weekend

When my hatch back got shattered. After the clean up. I was cruising around with the top off. It looked better with the read deck lid in place.

Nissan Pulsars had removable hatches (quick disconnect hinges and snap-on gas-supports and the hardware for folding the supports out of the way). The pieces could probably very easily be adapted to be used on your Camaro, if you're looking for a project. The Pulsars are fun little cars when you removed the hatch and t-tops, with emphasis on "little" in both the physical sense and horsepower sense. But since that car came with provisions for doing what you described, I doubt you'd get into trouble with cops for it for doing it on a similar car. But I think you should find a way to get the rear deck lid on there if you do, because it does look kinda ghetto without it. Have fun.

I acutally thought about doing that one time a while back... I was sitting around trying to think of a good way to quickly remove the rear glass, but keep the deck lid...

If you can figure out a quick way to do this, I would love to see it!

I've thought about doing this before....why not just get a hatch out of a totalled third gen, bust out the window and frame, and use the lower part when the hatch is off???

I was thinking more along the lines of taking off your hatch, and finding a wrecked 3rd gen convertable, and take its trunk deck, it should lock in the same place, then all you'd have to do is anchor the front of it somehow to the car whch shouldnt be too hard.

jsut an idea.

Oh, sorry. You were serious.

j/k I just know those aren't exactly populating the junkyards right now, since I'm looking for some rear interior panels for my 'vert.

Besides, your idea wouldn't work. The trunk area is completely reshaped, especially because of the unique spoiler convertables have.

Another problem with only using the lower part is the fact that those seals and stuff would all be exposed..... Now if one of the guys into fiberglass wanted to do something to fix that, then I dont think that it would really be a problem.... You could even add a zipper or somthing on the inside so that in case of sudden rain, you could zip a piece of canvas (or the clear plastic they use for convertable windows..) over your hatch area (only if it rains...)

Just a thought...

Does anyone have the targa hatch for their Camaro. I saw the add in a SuperChevy magazine once and I saw a picture online. It looks like what the rear hatch of a Miata or a jaguar XJS. It looks kinda cool with the little vertical window, and I bet it helps performance by getting rid of all that heavy glass.

I've thought about how to make use of that area. Imagine they(aftermarket folks) made a canvas-type piece that would cover the rear area of a Camaro/Firebird, like the crap they make for Wranglers. The best I could come up with was trying to get a NOTCHBACK!!!
Luck would have it, I got one. Check out the pics at my link.
4th Gens have an aftermarket version w/a slide down window.

Does anyone know if its illegal to drive your vehicle in highway or street in the state of New york. I know its potentially danerous, but im curious. I have done it before, but havent seen a cop in sight so i would like to know if its illegal to drive without the glass hatch??????????????????

As long as no one is sitting in the hatch area...

They are good but just because they say that GM doesn't make it anymore isn't neccessarily true because I have heard of more than one instance that they said GM don't make it anymore and of people going to Chevy dealers and getting the parts they need.

I guess I'm not the only on e whos thought about doing this then. I'm restoring my 88 IROC with t-tops. i have an 88 z28 parts car. I plan on removing the glass from the hatch of the parts car, and painting that when i repaint the IROC. and ya i had the same idea about the wrangler type canvas/clear plastic cover. i figured I could use snaps like the wranglers do, like rivit snaps along the outside of the hatch weather stripping, then stretch the canvas around the weather stripping and snap it down like a toneau cover on a truck. attatch the canvas along the bottom of the inside of the decklid and roll it up on a nice day and have 2 straps with snaps to secure it rolled up and conceiled under the decklid. then when the weather gets colder just put the other glass hatch back on...maybe I could make the plastic window in the canvas into a chevy bowtie shape??
