I just used "Hot Rims" on my GTA wheels a week ago. Seemed to do a fairly decent job - I am going to do some more detailing this weekend and I might do the wheels again.
I didn't have any problems with this product - kinda spendy at $6-something a bottle, but it seemed to work good.

Colgate makes some nice toothbrushes LOL. I've cleaned them that way and it won't scratch the clear coat. Then you can use almost any brake dust remover regularly and not have a problem.
try the armorall wheel cleaner in the silver bottle that stuff is bad. you better plan on buying 2 bottles to do 4 wheels thats how much it took me. but it worked great on my gta and my formula wheels with no scrubbing.

i have the gta style wheels made by ARE and i use a soft brush, kinda like a paint brush but its for wheels so you can get in betwwen the cross laces,it really helps out to do it but it still is a pain, castrol wheel cleaner is good.
I used an inexpensive, versatile solution called "Simple Green". You should be able to buy it at basically any store that sells household cleaning agents. It's bio-degradeable, smells nice, and has actually seemed to help repel dirt from my rims. Despite the dusty area I drive in, I haven't had to clean my rims in almost 3 months.
Just spray the material in the bottle, as is, onto your wet rims (warm water would be a plus), wait a couple of minutes, then rinse the rims with a hose. All done!
Hope that helps.
