rim cleaning help

What is the best way to clean these rims? They don't feel/appear to be alumnum. Can anyone give me info on these beside the fact that they are 15in 5 lugs? Came from an 84 Trans Am.

Thanks for whatever info you can give me.

Re: rim cleaning help

They are aluminum wheels, painted gold. Since they're gold, I'll assume the car is black with gold ground effects, that's the only color combo I've seen the painted gold wheels on. They're 15x7" wheels, and are the correct wheels for an 84 T/A. Those are pretty much the most common wheels on thirdgen firebirds, found on 84-92 cars. Firebirds and T/A's both got them. As far as cleaning them, soap and water will probably be your best bet, maybe simple green to get brake dust off. They can be refinished as well, by stripping the old paint off and repainting them. It does take a bit of effort though, getting the old paint off can take a while because of all the areas to get.

Thanks for that info. The aluminum gold part I can clean I think, but what I'm having real trouble with is the thin circular strip of metal that seperates the gold aluminum from the tire rubber. This is starting to get dirty and slightly corroded. Would I just take a wirebrush to this part? Thanks.

Re: rim cleaning help

Sand paper. Lots and lots of sand paper. Then a polish of your choice. You can also paint the holes an accent color.

Here's mine after lots of sanding and polishing.
