Yes tapping is the hardest part and the most painfull, and if you dont do it right, the end reasalt is bad and you did all that work for nothing

yes, my car was factory silver in that area, and i went with a gunmetal finish which was abit darker to help bring out the shine more. It worked well. taping these ones off did suck. gotta clean those little stripe lines and get a good coat of paint in there. took a while

Nice job on the rims. I'm in the middle of doing my own set, hopefully they turn out as nice!

Peeler? Ok, I heard that earlier today from a paint shop owner. Thanks. I guess it's time to start working on these wheels. I guess if a screw them up I can always go ahead with the Torque Thrust II's.

ive got my iroc wheels in the basement, clear coat is all cracked up
so let me get this straight ...??
u jsut use stripper to take the clear coat off, then paint the painted parts.. do you NOT put new clear coat on the entire wheel then? just on over where u paint the grey paint? or do u re-clear the entire rim?? aeresol can spray clear and paint and primer?????

Re: My 16" iroc wheels restoration. (Pics)
So, when you laid down the paint stripper, did it cause any problems with the tire or valve stem? Also, did you remove the wheel weights?
I want to do this to my z28 rims, but I cant afford to dis-mount the tires, or to replace that stuff. I can't imagine those "cards" would really keep the aircraft stripper off the tire?
Also, did you sand the spokes before you painted the gray?
Finally, did you use special primer and clear for wheels too? Or was that regular primer, and clear?

Re: My 16" iroc wheels restoration. (Pics)
I think you would have to sand the curb rash down smooth and buff that area out. After doing one of mine and starting the second one i can tell you to go get the aircraft stripper. I got some that was in a spra can and it works beautifully. I guess sprayed that on and lightly scraped with a plastic putty knife. I then went and washed it off with a waterhose. It sure beats the stripper I got from lowes. I had to take steel wool to get that off. Then the aluminum was scratched so I had to buff it out with tripoli then make sure all of the buffing compound was off before painting. That aircraft stripper saved an easy 2 hours of work.

i know this is an old thread but im trying to do a set right now. one of my wheels is gold while the rest are raw silver. the prob is i tried to strip the gold and it wont come off. is the gold anodized onto the wheel? i tried two different strippers there is no clear and it took off the rattle can color change paint easy. i have not tried the official aircraft stripper yet. i cant be the first person to ever strip a gold rim??

I stripped and painted my gold wheels.Repainted them flat black. You have to let the stripper sit on ther a while and let it do the work. The stubborn parts took a little wire brush the size of a tooth brush for the tight spaces and a wire brush on a drill motor.May not have been the best way but it worked for me and turned out looking good.People cant believe I painted my wheels.

Here is my before:
and after:
and back on the car with new tires:
I just sanded the clear off. Did not need to repaint the inlays. Took some time but they came out great. I did not polish them as much as the previous picture.

I like the wheels polished like these....I did a set of '86 wheels....sanded all the metal smooth, sanded all the paint off, had area that is normally grey powdercoated black (to match car) and then polished wheels until I could shave in them.....looks good...

Re: My 16" iroc wheels restoration. (Pics)
Wheels look much better. I'm in the process of doing the same thing to the same 88-90 double line style, but after sanding I'm buffing them. It's alot of work but the end result is worth it. I have all the center caps but I'm missing the emblems in the center. Anyone know where I can get new emblems without having to buy the whole caps?

Re: My 16" iroc wheels restoration. (Pics)
Just something to keep in mind, the striper I used broke down my valve stems and they started leaking the first time I striped wheels. The wheels in the picture below I did with just the bare wheels. I suggest dismounting the tires and pulling the valves first.

Yes, refinishing wheels is a lot of work but the results are definitely worth it. It looks like everybody here got great results. For people who are interested in getting their wheels done but don't have the time, we now offer wheel polishing. We will remove the clear coat, smooth the factory tooling marks, and polish the aluminum surfaces to a mirror finish. We also repaint the accents. Prices run $75 to $100 per wheel. Contact us for more information.

Just got them polished and painted by Denny at Thirdgen Ranch. Stupid weights are gone to the inside. I just have to decided if I want to re clear them. I think I will re clear. But yes the Gold IROC's are some of the nicest ever.
Here is my other set of rims...92 Z28's all polished up, also done by Thirdgen Ranch's Denny

The gold is ok but it doesn't go with every car color. It looks really good with a black car, but doesn't look good on a red car. Personally the charcoal grey on a 88-90 style rim in one of the nicest ever made.

where can i buy the aircraft stripper? so you use the stripper, sand/ buff then spray the entire wheel with clear?
