My 16" iroc wheels restoration. (Pics)
Re: My 16" iroc wheels restoration. (Pics)
I got mine at an autobody paint supply place. The brand name is Klean Strip and it's called aircraft paint remover and works great. I've read that Busch's Clearcoat Remover for Aluminum Surfaces works really well but I can't get it here in California. You need to use the stripper then sand (180, 320 & 400) then buff. If you spray the entire wheel with clear it will lose some of the shine. You could also choose to buff the wheel to a shine then put on a coat of carnabu wax every once in awhile.

They are a bit darker in real life than they look in the photo - probably a shade or so darker than the original colour but they have a lot more metallic fleck in them than the originals plus they have heaps of clear on them as well which makes them really stand out [only on the colour part, not on the polished parts].
I tried a darker metallic grey on one section as a test before I painted them but thought it was just too dark - its just whatever you prefer yourself really

Re: My 16" iroc wheels restoration. (Pics)
so im working on my wheels, the 87 iroc design, they were gold, but im goin gloss black, i started one, the black is hard to keep shining, but the polishing is what im having a problem with, i bought mothers aluminum and mag polish, and ya, it works good, some resaults better than others, cleaning before polishing not being the problem. i have to hand polish ever little bit by hand and it takes several coats to get a lil resault. this dont seem right, ive put alot of time into my wheels and havent gotten alot outa it. you guys say buff, like with an acutal buffer? and wax? explain please??? i need anything to help relief my hands of polishing. lol

Just got them polished and painted by Denny at Thirdgen Ranch. Stupid weights are gone to the inside. I just have to decided if I want to re clear them. I think I will re clear. But yes the Gold IROC's are some of the nicest ever.
Here is my other set of rims...92 Z28's all polished up, also done by Thirdgen Ranch's Denny

Before strip/polish:

After:

Subtle, but makes a big difference in the overall appearance of the car for sure.

https://imgur.com/jgwB7gU Not my car, but here is an '89 with the stock wheels stripped & polished. This pic is on a thread on Facebook. It's entitled Chris's 89 Iroc-Z Extensive build thread.
