dirt stuck to 6 month paint

Greetings,

My 1989 iroc had a quater panel dent repaired about 6 months ago. It got a 2 stage paint job which looked really dull to begin with but with a buffing it came out looking really good. From the start dust seemed to be attracted more to that part than the rest of the car. About a week ago i washed the car again but the dirt wont come off. I mean it's really stuck to the car. What can I do to fix this?

Thanks,
Gerry

Light sand it and repaint. If it's stuck to the paint then it was there when they painted the car.

Try to clay bar it.

Before you do any kind of sanding, I would try a claybar first as stated above. Make sure to keep it well lubricated.

Once you do get it off, put a good coat of sealer wax on the area. That will keep it from happening again.

I would try the following, in this order, until it's off (these are going from least to most abrasive, the idea is to remove as little paint as possible):

1. Claybar
2. Polishing compound
3. Rubbing/Buffing compound
4. Wet sanding with 1500 grit sandpaper (only as a last resort, it's easy to sand through the paint)

Re: dirt stuck to 6 month paint

The problem is almost certainly that your clearcoat (and most likely, the base) has not been allowed to harden properly before the cutting process has begun. You can test this by just lightly scratching a low visability area with your fingernail. if it binds at all, then the laquer isn't hard. you say that it was dull to start with and that's a little worrying as even before cutting, clear should look fairly glossy. I bet that the base wasn't allowed to harden before the clear was applied. It will harden with time. I have the same problem with my yellow '83. If I looked closely at the paint, it had lots of black specs in it. Here in blighty, I used AutoGlym paint renovator as its not too abrasive. I've also used the Maguires three stage cut, polish and wax system and that worked well. Clay bars are good but the laquer must be hard before you use one as it will bunch up the paint if your not careful, especially on a respray.
