Opinions Please

Well, the car is coming out of several long years or storage, and I am thinking of changing a few things. The car currently looks like the pictures in my VB garage.

Here is what I am thinking about doing:
-Remove pin striping along gfx
-Remove black plastic trim on door
-Remove "Camaro" banner (We all know what it is)
-Add bowtie grille and fogs
-I know some 16 or 17" Irocs would look good, but that simply is not in the budget for now

These things would clean it up some I think, but I am worried that it will loose some of its originality and look like every other 80s camaro around.

I am also looking for some advice on buffing. Since I still have the original 1985 paint, there is no clearcoat. There is a little discoloration in a few places from carelessness during past projects (I think some brake clean or similar spatter) that I would like to buff out. I have never buffed a car though, and I do not want to burn the paint.

Re: Opinions Please

For removing the lower stripes I would probably go with an eraser disk. That should be the easiest way of doing that without messing up your paint. Are you sure there is no clear coat on the car? As far as I know, most if not all third gens came with clear coat. Again, I am fairly sure, but don't quote me on that one. You will want to know whether it is single stage or base clear before you try any buffing.

I am by no means an expert on paint, so I really have no idea, but I was told that they started using clearcoat on thirdgens in 86' when I asked on the historical board.

If thats what you were told in the historical board, that must be right. I have never dealt with a thirdgen older than 87 so everything I have seen was base/clear. You learn something new everyday, I stand corrected on my previous statement. I haven't done any buffing on single stage paint so I can't really help you in that department. I would think any minor scratches should buff out just like on base/clear, but someone more familiar with singe stage would be better suited to give advice on exactly what to do.
