Why I hate Summer...

OK so the other day, I finally got around to sanding the cast finish off the aluminum distributor cover I bought (Back in December) in order to paint it to match the rest of my TPI setup.

So I hang it out on the back deck to spray, apply the first coat and go inside for 15 minutes. I come back out to apply the second coat, and a spider has begun to spin a wed using the cover as one of the mounting points . So I'm like hey WTF get off of there! I apply the second coat, and come back 15 minutes later and am attacked by a pack of angry wasps who don't seem to like the flood lamp at 1AM. I retreat for 10 minutes come back and apply the second coat, then just now I went outside to apply the third and I am bombarded by a swarm of mosquitos and a mouse sized moth decides to fly right into my hand (Wasn't bothered by the moth just startled the crap outta me).

It was so much easier when I did the plenum and runners back in the fall in 65F weather and didn't have 94% humidity.

Now in about 20 minutes I am going back out to tape off the cover and fill in the slats red and I wonder what mysteries await me this time...

I'll post photos when It's finished.

Re: Why I hate Summer...

I don't think the paint is gonna hold with this humidity.

using the same masking tape method I used on the plenum in the fall to fill in the slats, the black is just peeling off bare aluminum like dead skin. I will attempt Q-Tip repair once I get the masking tape off, but things aren't looking good. Clearcoat has a way of disguising imperfections in the paint, but I'm afraid It's bodning well with the lauminum and will contract a sudden case of lepracy once I put it in the oven

Re: Why I hate Summer...

Well, here we go. Hit it with second coat of red and lifted the masking tape...

...and boy was I pissed. And yes that is a red spot on the left side of the piece where I accidentally had the can aimed in the WRONG DIRECTION! That was easily covered up though.

Got out the Q-Tips and began touchup. Looks like crap now but luckily the clear has the amazing effect of removing surface imperfection and depth issues.

I'm off to hit it with the clear. Wish me luck!

Re: Why I hate Summer...

I always thought it was funny how the clear coat turns to glaze when it first hits the paint...

Re: Why I hate Summer...

well yeah, bugs are going to be attracted to a flood light at 1 AM! Do you have a picture of how your plenum looks painted that way?
