wheel paint question

I got my wheels stripped and repainted. Do i need to spray clear over the painted part? What about the rest of the wheel, does it need cleared?

Re: wheel paint question

i had a black 91 with black painted inside of the spokes. the entire wheel had a darn fine clear coat on it. my 90 is all clear boat even though its not painted. i suggest you get A VERY GOOD clear coat - they will not discolor.

that is my 2 cents.

Depends on how hard you want to work at keeping the machined surface clean. The set of 15" Z28/RS wheels I redid were red with a clear coat over the entire wheel. When I finished, I all the red sections were black with a clear coat, and I left the unpainted surfaces bare. Those wheels ended up on a friend's S-10 pickup.

I refinished my rims about 7-8 years ago and I clear coated the whole rim. I think its easier to Keep clean and Too clean, if left bare you'll need alot of metal polish, and use it every time you wash your car....

Re: wheel paint question

If i don't clear them, then I have to wax them to protect the finish?

Take care of them like any other painted surface, even if clear coated. But if you leave the machined surfaces untouched, then you need the metal polish there.

And you should also use a sealer after using metal polish,(shine will last longer). If clear coated, use soap 'n' water..... NEVER use rim clearer on clear coat...happened on another car, not my GTA....thank god!!!!! It F***ed those rims right up...

Re: wheel paint question

I have already stripped the clearcoat off of both my practice wheels. I have polished and painted one and it looks amazing! once i figure out what I am doing i am going to do my car's spare set of wheels.

Polishing clearcoated wheels can be fixed by removing the clearcoat. They are not ruined.

So are you polishing them first and then clear coating the Whole Rim, or just leaving it bare(painted center and polished outer rim)????

Re: wheel paint question

if its a DD then clear coat them, if its a plesure car then no clear coat but you better keep a good sealer wax on them

another option, if you are polishing the entire wheel strip all the paint off and take them to a local truck stop (you may have to try a few) but anyway they got aluminum polishing guys there, they can take alum that looks like grey primer and make it look like chrome, and they put a sealer on it that will last a year on a tractor trailer, now thats atleast a hundred thousand miles and in bad conditions......ask them about the shine warranty the guys who did my alum on my truck had a 1 year, most guys offer about 6 months to a year, i would figure it would last alot longer on a 4wheeler (car lol) than a tractor trailer since its not near the miles in a year

Re: wheel paint question

i'm not going to powder coat them, i like the way they are turning out painted. I like the idea of waxing them, i was pretty much just looking for someone to valadate the idea anyway.

Thanks for the imput guys. Any more comments will be welcome.

Re: wheel paint question

Are you asking about, waxing the painted part? Using sealer wax on the polished part of the rim?

Re: wheel paint question

I stripped my iroc 16 inch wheels. polished them taped them off. painted the insert area. then removed the tape and cleared the whole wheel with a rattle can rim paint and clearcoat from autozone. that was a year ago. and they still look new. good luck
