Shaving the fuel filler door

Ok maybe this is a crazy idea but hear me out...
My friends brother has a cherry 71 blazer, one cool thing about it is that it has it's fuel filler door shaved. One of the taillights acctually pops out and you can put gas in through there.
My question is if it would be possible to shave the gas filler door and relocate it somewhere else...
or am i crazy?

Its possible, but it would take a lot of planning, designing, measuring, fabricating, and plain old body work to pull it off successfully. Don't do it half-as$ed, and whatever you do, don't allow fuel vapors to escape into the interior under any circumstances.

One possibility could be to get a fuel tank off a GM car that has the fuel fill behind the licensce plate so you could move the fill back there somehow.

nah you're not crazy. shaving the gas tank filler makes the car look smoother. its a pretty common mod in the sport truck community. the most common ways they do it is like you said, have the taillight swing out and run the fuel line from there, or they relocate it to the inside of the bed. I think the best place to relocate the filler on a 3rd gen camaro would be inside the hatch. The only crappy part is you'd have to open the hatch every time you fill up. I planned to do this on my next project camaro, but I wanted to take it a step further and get rid of the heavy gas tank altogether and put in a race fuel cell.

I had acctually thought about relocating it inside the hatch cause i don;t really think opening the hatch to put gas in is too much of a hassle. plus i think it would be worth it. but i have two main concerns...
1. Like mentioned before, how would i keep gas fumes from entering the car if the filler in acctually inside the car.
2. aside from the fumes, what if i over fill my tank? i really don't want to spill a bunch of gas inside my car.

I'm sure there are clever ways to get around these two issues...hmmmmm

1) get a properly sealed gas cap
2) don't overfill the tank

I have thought about doing this to my car, but it would be a complete PITA to do it. What I will do which will look almost as good is shave the ugly little lip off that comes out to open the fuel door by. Im just gonna make it flat. The easiest way to actually shave the fuel door would be to put a fuel cell in the hatch area. Then you would just fill it from there.

I saw a car almost like that blazer. It would automatically pop out and back in. It was wicked.

Anyway, although everyone here has a good point, you should not do it until someone actually says that they have placed a tank in the hatch, and shares their opinion. Although I also have not done it, I would hesitate on putting the filler or cell in a hatchback. You'll probably still smell it right after a trip to the gas station. By the time your finish filling up the tank, you'd think your occupants were smoking weed while you were paying the station attendant. Hmmm...maybe I will do it then

Not that I would do this mod,but it would probably be fairly simple to set it up using your stock fuel tank. All you would have to do is somehow set it up to where your filler was inside the rear storage compartment(the small plastic door with the lock on it)Its already basicly in the same spot, you just have to modify the neck on the tank.......to easy...:-)

see this is good, some ideas are being thrown back and fourth... i like the idea of putting the filler in that little compartment in the hatch. But i REALLY need know if there is a way to do it so it wont stink up the car with gas fumes...

Instead of shaving the fuel cap, how about changing it to something that looks like the Aircraft type fuel fillers? That would look trick!

I plan on taking an 79 Cutlass gas tank and removing the 15gallon camaro tank and swaping them and running it behind the plate. Only thing is to do this I have to switch to the slam latch hatch. I dont' car cuase the pull down latch sucks *** anywayz.

With alot of spare time on your hands and some metal working skills you could mount a fuel cell in the deep lower portion of the 'trunk' (or just cut it out completely. Then weld in a new flat floor giving the fuel cell a place to mount to on the outside. A filler neck tunnel could be formed to run underneath the latch comming out behind the plates (on a camaro of course). This would keep the fuel cell seperated from the inside of the car preventing the fume problem. After that if you are really handy, since the old tank wouldn't be in place anymore, this would allow the gas tank hump part of the 'trunk' to be lowered a considerable amount, leaving a nice flat 'trunk' area to build a 'hidden' sub box that looks like the gas tank hump that was lowered. Relocated tank, 'hidden' subs & no real space lost so the t-tops would still fit.

wow, thats pretty good idea, really good acctually...
But i'll leave that project for someone else
Too much work for me... i've acctually got an idea of my own that would relocate the filler behind the taillight (92 Firebird).
I just came up with this idea so there may be alot of things wrong with it but here goes...
run the pipe to the taillight, and design a recessed are for the cap and junk to go in so that it wont stick out any farther than metal behind the taillight.
on the taillight cut off all of the studs, and on the top of the taillight make some kind of hinges so that it swings out from the bottom. and so that the tail light doesn't open or move around you can use those magnets the use on cabinets and stuff. you know the ones that when you press in they click and stay in place, then to open them you simply press on them again and they pop up enough for you to open the doors all the way...then you can fool around with the wiring so the wires don't get in the way...
Ok that was it...
lemme know if this is a good or a bad idea, and if it's a good one, some tips on implimenting it would be greatly appreciated...

Yeah, an Aircraft type fuel filler door, just like the new eclipses. Instead of it being aluminum, it would have to be metal. There's a pic of one on an Evoluzione.

blaze, that mod is very common within the sport truck community, like the other guy said.
just takes quite a bit of fabbing.
and since you plan on doing this in a car instead of a truck, either that or having the fuel filler neck behind the tag would be more convienient after filling up, if you dont want the fumes lounging around the interior for a while.
