Doing the H4 upgrade.
Hey guys, I been looking at everyone doing the H4 light conversions and finally went ahead and ordered me a set. I purchased these from a ebay member neondials. The kit was kinda pricey but came with everything needed and some additional items. The kit comes with the 4 Housings, tinted diamond cut bumber signal lights, tinted side marker lights, some cheap bulbs I am sure, as well as the adapters to just plug and play. I am still out of town at this moment but my girlfriend took some picture for me and they are attached below. The reason I really pushed for this conversion is because I eventually want to put some HIDs atleast for the lows. Anywho, let me know what you think of the kit and I should be home in 2 weeks to install and post a bunch of new pics.
The kit ran 170 shipped for anyone wanting to know.

Re: Doing the H4 upgrade.
Give me two weeks and I will let you know for sure. I asked the girl, and I do believe the actual headlight setup is metal. As for the markers and signals, I am sure they are plastic, just like stock. But like I said, if I am on schedule with my job, I should be home in two weeks to install and answer any questions.

Re: Doing the H4 upgrade.
Alright guys. I got home from Austria last night and was up at 3 this morning becuase of the time difference and I got them lights in. I am really pleased how they turned out. They may be a little brighter once I get the car out, shes pretty dead. Won't crank over but had enough juice to run the lights.
First picture was my current setup before the mods.
Secong pic is showin' the plug and play harness.
Third pic shows the left lights in and the stock in on the right

First pic shows the headlights on between stock and new.
Secong pic shows the tinted side marker.
Third pic shows tinted signal.... I am going to take out the blue bulbs from in the housing. I hate how it gives off that blue look when not lit.

Secong pic is marker lit
Third pic is just a finished shot.
192RS - The one bad thing about thses lights....they are not metal housings. They are a thick plastic I believe.
Sinister Z - Your right about the pics coming out blurry, but some seem to be alright. Thanks

Leave the blue bulbs in there...it looks awesome all you need is the blue turn signals from sylvania, they are the 2057...when they are off they are blue & when they are on they are amber for street legal purposes

Re: Doing the H4 upgrade.
Hmmm, I would do that if I dug the blue, but I really don't like it. I drove her out tonight. The lights were bright but after I drove a while....all a sudden the lights would start flickering and pretty much go out all the way to where I couldnt see ****. When I turned on the highs, they would hardly even work. I do think I remember on the site when I got them saying somthing about resistors. The bulbs they have me are some HID knockoffs. My question is...... do you think I need to put them resistors in to solve the problem, or, do you think I can just go buy the Silverstar H4 bubls and that would fix the problem as well?

Re: Doing the H4 upgrade.
they look good though, maybe you can scratch off the blue from the bulbs. alot of the time that's like tint over a clear bulb. and they make silver/chrome bulbs for the parking lights that emit orange when on.

Looks great. Same setup I did on my moms camaro.
I do agree tho, the blue doesn't look good with a red camaro. Now if they made red tinted bulbs it would look a whole lot better IMO.

A resistor would just cut down the voltage.Sorta defeats the purpose of installing brighter lights in the first place.

Putting another H4 bulb inplace of those blue ones.Isnt going to solve your issue. All H4 bulbs are the same wattage.

What's happening is that your light switch can't handle the current of the H4 lights. It has a thermal breaker in it and heats up and opens when the current reaches 30amps IIRC, then cools down and your lights come back on. There is a fix in the tech articles on the home page, you need a couple of relays.

Well damn, wish I knew it would be this much a pain in the ***. I did have the Silverstars in the car....but, I liked the new look of the diamont cut housings, looks neat. I guess I will have to look into doing some relays. Either that or order me some HIDs. Thanks for the help guys. Not sure when I will get around to working on here, but I will let you know what the outcome is.

Re: Doing the H4 upgrade.
Its not really worth going thru this.No matter how you slice it or what others will say.The H4 still does not give you better lighting. If it was better, why would the firebird guys want to upgrade too!
However, If your really set on it.Any quality relay will do the job.For the OEM look id get the later style(weather pack) relays from the f-body line & use those.
A good new relay is about $20+(x2), plus fuse/holder, wiring.Your looking at a few bucks.Too much considering how much those light cost already.
Those lamps are good fixtures to mount real projectors in (w/HID), but Im baised about this modification.Worth it though.

Re: Doing the H4 upgrade.
Get a pair of Bosch SPDT (single pull - double throw) relays - just ask for a pair of Bosch relays. They'll handle up to 30 amps apiece and are available at most electronics stores, even some auto parts stores carry them. I've picked most of the ones I got at my local car stereo shop.

Get this harness
http://www.summitracing.com/parts.as...33&image=large
It'll draw power straight from the battery and use your factory wiring to work your lights. It should take care of your problem. You may have to re-pin the connector though as per this post

Re: Doing the H4 upgrade.
That's a nice looking harness, and not much more than the hardware required to make it. I would think it would be correctly pinned for the H4 lights, it is for the H4 upgrade. Just a thought...

Re: Doing the H4 upgrade.
You'd think so but, according to the thread that has the post I pasted above, our lights are wired a little differently and you need to rearrange the pins. They say it's only a matter of pulling two of them out and switching them.

Re: Doing the H4 upgrade.
It's not hard, I've done the re-pin myself, with heavier wire. Since all four lights are the same, I wired the inside pair by splicing the hi & low leads together. The only time they're used is when you switch to high beam, it makes a super bright high beam.

And as far as re pinning. It looks like this kit replaces the wiring all the way back to where it should need repining. It gets rid of the old connecters and everything. I just ordered it, and Summit is great with shipping so I should have it in a couple days. I will let you know how it goes.

I like the H4 or HID idea for our cars....but I cant stand how the actual lens looks...it's toooooo clear....it's screaming "import" everytime I see the headlights off. I wonder if there is a company that makes a factory looking lens to hold a halogen/hid type bulb?

Re: Doing the H4 upgrade.
You don't even need adapter harnesses for the H4 bulbs. All you need to do is re-pin your original connectors, moving the pins 1 spot. This can be done with a small screwdriver.
As for lenses too clear, it has nothing to do w/ H4, H4 is a bulb identification (lo & hi beam dual filament halogen bulb)

I understand it's a bulb identification.....I would be switching over to an H4 type bulb...and the new lens (which hold the H4 type bulb) looks very cheap....

Get Some E1 spec Hella bulbs instead of those chinese things if you care for having enough canlde power on the road. Get some osram or Philips blue vision lamps, about the best thing you can do short of going full xenon.

Re: Doing the H4 upgrade.
Ite, her in lays the next problem. I got the harness from Summit already. I ran it in the car and hooked it all up. For the power and everything, it just comes with a stock conector that I asumed pluged into the high beam becuase all three terminals have wiring. I hooked it up and turned the lights on, they work, I hit the high beams and they came on and worked, but once I went to switch back to the lows, they are stuck on high and wont do a damn thing. Ill turn the lights off and back on, and still stuck. The indicator on the dash changes but nothing else. Anyone got any idea? I called the company and the guy I need to talk to wont be in for 20 min. and I will have to leave for work by then, so I will need to call tomarrow.

I'm pretty sure that's one of the problems caused by the repinning issue. Try it per twin_turbo's indications above and it'll probably work.

Re: Doing the H4 upgrade.
Wooooo babe, we are in action. Sooo, I am on night shift and am still on that schedule for sleep so when I went to bed I could not sleep and kept bothering the women until she kicked me outta bed. I decided to keep researching and finally went out and repinned the connector supplied with my light kit in the first place per the drawing below. **** works now, beautiful. Now, the below drawing is true and works, but I have also seen another on here which is def. Anywho, thanks twin for posting the reconection and galetti for the harness. So, also, we nwo know, the matrix harness I believe is for the cars that already have H4, it isn't for our upgrade and does need repinned. Thanks everyone, I will post pics of the harness and whatnot tomarrow, I am also gunna go get silverstars tomarrow. I have the xtravision in there as the lows now and they are brighter than them chinese blues, so silverstars should be nice for the lows and I will move them xtravision to the highs in which I never use. Thanks again.

I'd like to provide a relay-switched power source for my H4 bulbs, but I don't want to cut or modify my factory wiring if I can avoid it. I'm hoping this kit will plug directly into the factory headlight plugs so I don't have to make my own harness.

Re: Doing the H4 upgrade.
For those who have used this harness, did it have the male-style connector that plugs into the factory headlight harness, or did that need to be cut?
I'd like to provide a relay-switched power source for my H4 bulbs, but I don't want to cut or modify my factory wiring if I can avoid it. I'm hoping this kit will plug directly into the factory headlight plugs so I don't have to make my own harness.

Re: Doing the H4 upgrade.
I also did the H4 conversion on my 85 camaro and they look great, but if I have the wiring kit connected, the car runs very rough and stalls within a minute or two even with the lights off. If I turn the lights on, the car stalls instantly. I cannot figure out what may be the problem. My battery and alternator both tested good.
