Engine bay paint

Ok, so here I go. Engine out, preparing to remove anything and all in way. Going to be painting engine bay. I AM FINALLY getting around to putting my built LT1 and 6 speed in car, and while motors out may as well paint bay.

Heres the main question, I have read up and understand the whole process. I want this cheap, and to look good. Cleaning with simple green, and sanding bay is an obvious thing on the to-do list. The real question is this. I am fairly good at painting with rattle cans. The true way to prime and paint is what I fear. Does priming entail spraying on with a full coat until everything is covered, then once dry do you paint one coat using color of choice, or is it vice versa. Do you prime in dust coats and paint in dust coats?

I have tried multiple methods on various plastics and metals here and there and cannot find a definate answer. I am wanting an engine bay that will last years, while still remaining purty. I am also fearing paint peel from engine heat and streaks from oils/fluids that may leak. Any help, please

I am always open to opinions.
