So is it really hard to tint thirdgen rear windows?

I've been to 3 different tint places, and each of them are asking for $350-$400 for the rear window alone....they're telling me it's because of the curves at the side and they are going to screw it up several times etc etc...

Re: So is it really hard to tint thirdgen rear windows?

Well the previous owner did the shittiest job ever on my bronco. On the big rectangle mirriors that are basically as flat a surface as you can get next do driver windows he left the bottom edges all tattered and torn, but ghetto as ****.

He also decided it was a good idea to tint the back windows... and when he realized he could see out the back, took a razor blade to the tint.... and in the process killing my rear window defrost

So yes, tinting is hard. But maybe he was just a moron.

There's some good vids on youtube that might help if you're doing it yourself. Do need to pre shrink it though and I would personally remove the hatch to make things easier.

+1 on the youtube videos. Plus, check out fleabay for the precut stuff. It's not really difficult, just time consuming and tedious. Now, getting old faded tint off without demolishing the rear def grid was truly a joy!

Find a new shop.....I believe the last one I had done, was $140 for both doors & the rear hatch! And they do EXCELLENT work, never even hesitate on the 3rd gen rear glass. Even do the rear in 1-piece tint.

$150 is about right. You'll want to find someone who's been around awhile. It's not a job you want to give to a rookie. If you don't know who in your town does good quality work, check with a couple dealerships and find out who they use to tint windows on new cars.

I found this site a little while ago in regards to my bronco.

They sell repair kits for damaged grids, and worse case scenario they have replacement grids.

The grid they sell is a tiny bit bigger, so you might not be able to tint over it though. I'm not sure, never tried it. Check their site, they have a pretty good faq

I paid $250 to have my sides and back glass done. I scraped the defroster lines off so it was nice and smooth. The back was in done in one piece. The guy did a awesome job, it's flawless.

Re: So is it really hard to tint thirdgen rear windows?

Thats to much tell them to eat their tint then. lol. I Paid 170 for all windows plus they took off the old tint and I also have the defroster in the back they usually charge more for that for the reason if they ruined it it will be hard to fix according to tint places but anyway I got limo all around and the film they use its life time warranty as well.

Maybe he's like me and doesn't drive his car in the winter. Stored mine about a month ago. I'm still hmm'ing and haaaaah'ing over getting mine done or not. I love tints, but I just don't seem to like them on red cars (my DD, a Sunburst Orange Caliber, is a fire-bronze type red and I like that).

It was very easy to tint my rear window. I went to the tint shop and handed the guy $85 and he put one piece of 5% on in about an hour. I drove away happy with a cooler interior.

I was quoted $150 for all 3, but Im worried about the defroster. Mine still works, and I dont want to screw it up, or remove it. Will the defroster screw up the tint?

WalMart has the static cling type tint in the size 72"x48". Usually for Motorhomes and trailers you can peel and reuse it over and over.

I'm wondering if it would stay in place hanging upside down on our hatches.
If it would stay I bet it wouldn't interfere with the defroster.

Tint doesn't affect our defrosters at all...It the lazy installer that ruins defrosters.

Right but what I mean is once the tint goes bad you can't peel it off without killing the defroster.

Maybe a cling type would solve that problem

Thats BS, I had all my windows tinted for $75 here in El Paso (granted its a border town and their are a billion tint shops here) . The guy scoffed at my back window also, but he was able to do it on a single sheet and it came out good.

Re: So is it really hard to tint thirdgen rear windows?

I've done 3 of my own cars and plan on doing my t/a in the spring. Side windows are a breeze. You mix half a spray bottle of water and the other half baby shampoo. Clean the windows well , peel your tint and soak it right away , that way if it sticks to itself it wont stick like glue. The rest is place and squeege until there is no water left. For the back window you need a heatgun for the curves. It takes practice but can be done. I plan on buying a roll for the rear and then precut ebay for the sides. I did my truck with pre-cut sides and then a roll from the local automotive store for the rear turned out really good. I would never pay $250-$400 for tint when I can do myself in a few hours for $50 max.

For a standard firebird rear window it should not be more than $100 dollars to tint, unless you have a formula aero wing which needs to be removed to tint to utilize a heat gun to dry the tint.

Re: So is it really hard to tint thirdgen rear windows?

Hey, sorry to revive a dead thread, but I wanted to let you guys know I found a genuine person who could tint my rear window! He's from the carribean and had been tinting windows his whole life, did my rear window for $100 and I think he did a great job. I got 5% back, 20% side

got mine done at a place called Solar Solutions in MA. the place looks pretty ghetto but they do very quality work. i got all three of my windows done in 20% for 150. plus i came with a lifetime warrenty that says if anything happens to it (it peels, i tear it, it starts to purple) then they will replace it for free.

The wing does not need to be removed at all. The heat gun is worked from the inside.
