Car: 1986 Trans Am, 1991 Firebird
Engine: 355 TPI, 3.1L V6
Transmission: 700R4 in both
I love the body style of the thirdgens myself but really I like the Firebirds in general!

Just a side note, if I had an LO3 TBI engine like yours I'd throw it out for a carb...and that's only if I couldn't find a TPI setup! The LO3 only came factory with 170 HP....they got 4 cylinders making 250+ HP now!! Just my opinion tho'!

Ever since I was a little kid I wanted a 91-92 Camaro. I just loved the way 3rd gens look. I consider them to be one of the best looking Camaros out there. Well stock anyways. Modified 1st and 4th gens look damn nice. Everyone tells me to get rid of my car and get like a 240sx or Hachi Roku but I dont want to. I always wanted a 3rd gen. And I'm keeping it.

THE LOOKS, STYLE, LOOKS YOU GET, AND EASABILITY OR WORKING ON THE ENGINE.
ok i will be the first to say. i didnt know much about cars before i bought my IROC. all i wanted from cars were stereos and looks. not that is my second thought. i used to look under the hood of the 97 and be the most confused person, and after the insurance company took my car from me, DAMN PRICES, i bought a 1999 monte carlo Z34, i was still into looks, well when i sold my monte on DEC 8th, 1998 i bought a 1990 IROC-Z camaro, for the sole reason of making it as fast as possible in my spare time, while trying to pay for two cars (truck and camaro)and trying to pay for college!! working great actually. since college starts this fall!. well ok back to my story.

i first new that i wanted a 350, but i wanted Ttops, after finding a 305 TBI with Ttops and driving it(DISPLEASED), i knew i wanted a 350 even more. so i searched during the time i was selling my MONTE, well i found one the day i was offered money for my monte. so i went to see it. walked in the garage he turned it on, i sat in the car, hit the gas, and said i will be back on thursday to pick it up. never even drove the car. and since then i have been in love with this car. it has made soo many days go buy be soo good. when i picked up the car, i handed the guy the check he moved the boat that sat behind the car and said be careful its fast!! and i backed out and laid some marks in front of his house!! to go along with the ones he had already made. it was fun, i drove the car for two-three hours that night. went home stared at the car for about 10 minutes woke up the next day went to school showed off then went to my friends house and jacked it up to see what was up with it, anything to fix or not, found out the front sway bar was not connected so we connected it and it was a street assain now. i have had the liberty of learning all my knowledge of cars from this car and my S10. i know have pulled an engine and replaced it with newer (S10) and i have done body work and engine work on the camaro!!
the other reason is that it is soo easy compared to 4th gens to work on stuff under the hood, and even though there are soo many thirdgens on the road, TRY TO FIND A PERFECT ONE. well mine will be by the end of the summer. it is in the process of total strip down for paint soon!!

i attribute all my knowledge to thirdgens. they are soo awesome, and the guys who own the real thirdgens, not the ones with stuff falling out of them, and off of them, but the real ones, nice, clean, and running. those guys are the nicest guys in the world.

Oh and they make one HELLOFA SLEEPER CAR. no one knows what you could have.!! its great!

Car: 1989 Camaro RS

ok, seriously, I didn't like the cars at first, I thought that they were kind of ghetto looking. When I was 17 I really wanted a camaro like my dads (a 68 or a 69). All of the 69's that I saw were $4,000 for a rotten body. I found my car in florida and after spinning the tires for the first time I just began to fall for it. Now I think its one of the nicest looking one's I've seen, except for the 1st gen of course...

simple. when i was six i used to like saturns because i was young and was all for looks. then one day my dad took me to his friends saturn lot as a little "suprise" and the nicest black iroc-z pulled up next to me, gave a little rev, and pulled in a space with nothing around it. it was simply amazing. ever since that day i was obsessed with camaros. period. that whole ride home all i dad was ask questions about camaros. but before i started at this post, i thought they were all V8s, and knew pretty much nothing about the cars besides they are the nicest cars on the road when in good condtion. now that ive learned a lot about them, i cant wait till i get one with my name on the title in mid may and get to work it every nite i fall asleep dreaming about waking up one day for school, backing the car outa the garage, and then looking over to see a 1992 camaro RS 5 spd with t tops in my dads spot with the keys and a little bow on the door the antisipation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Car: 2001 Camaro Z28/1995 Camaro Z28
Engine: just a little 5.7(LS1-320/340 RW)
Transmission: SMOOOOOOTH T-56/Auto. . .
Axle/Gears: 3.42 and 2.73
When I was 19, I decided it was time for me to make something of myself. To do something that would help me do something with my life. I had a girlfriend whos brother was self-employed and married with 2 good kids. He built his own house. He had 2-3 new cars/trucks each year when he felt like getting one. He was basically SET! I felt I needed to do something drastic. I felt it was time to become MY OWN man. I joined the U S Navy then. While discussing my future with him one day, I noticed he had a 67 RS Camaro sitting in his garage. He was saving it for his (then 5 year old) daughter, so she would have a SWEET ride when she grew up. Next to this classic in his garage was a Silver Anniversary Corvette. A few cars over was a 88 IROC 305. Of all of these cars, the IROC struck me as the coolest. Not only because it was new at the time, but just had a menacing look to it the others didn't. That impression stuck with me. Weeks before I went to bootcamp, I found a 18th scale IROC model kit and spent time cleaning it up, cutting and sanding the edges smooth and preparing it for painting.
I never painted that car, but about 5 years ago, while home in between duty stations, I found that model kit still in my now wifes closet. I pulled it down and near instantly, the memories started coming back. I'm getting old now, since I can say I have memories Anyhow, to me, the aim to be sucessful, my desire to be MY OWN man, has become intertwined with the ideal of owning a THIRDGEN Camaro. I have never said I have the best Camaro and anyone who sees my car would never even call it a nice one. But to me, it is the fact that I have a bit of my success in my hands. I realize each person makes their own future. I feel I can make mine, I'm just starting a little rougher than most. With my Camaro, "I" am in control of my sucess.
***Side note***
My brother-in-laws daughter didn't want the 67' when she turned 16...(and he STILL won't sell), but she ended up getting a 99' Formula at least

Ever since I got my first Hot Wheels Camaro (a maroon third gen that came with my racing loop thing) when I was like 9 years old, I have wanted a car like it. Then a house about 3 blocks away had a 91/91 Z28 Convertable, all black and in pristene condition and every time they parked it outside I would go by on my bike like 6 times just staring at it. I loved that car so much. Then when I started looking for a car last September, I chose my favorite car, a third gen Camaro. A lot of people tell me to get a Z28 or a convertable or t-tops, but I don't care. What matters is I have a CAMARO, my favorite car in my favorite color with low miles. Ahh.. touching childhood memories.

Damn, that was good. I don't think I can top that.

Anyway I first got into these cars a weird way. I was driving on the highway by my house with my dad and I saw an 87-90 bright red GTA. It caught my eye. I started noticing more and more of these cars. I finally saw a 91 formula at a Nissan dealer later that month. I took it for a test drive and the power was incredible (hey i was used to driving non turbo 280zxs). Through highschool I got a lot of compliments and have had hundreds of different people in the car. Seems weird but I always have felt attached to my car because of my "highschool" days. (getting depressed )

Then watching Knight Rider really gets me pumped up . Re-runs come on here every day. I'm starting to tape them.
I just wish every owner was an enthusiast...

My 82 Z28 was the first 3rd Gen I ever saw. A guy that lives 3 houses down from my parents house bought it brand new, and I thought from the first time I ever saw it it was the most beautiful car I had ever seen. Well fast forward to 1992. I had been watching this Black Z28 with silver and red trim go up and down the block for ten years and one day it had a FOR SALE on it. I immediately rushed down the block to see what he wanted for the car. The guy said that the wife wanted a Van to haul the fam in, and he decided he needed to sell the Z. The car had 71,000 miles since he drove primarily only to work which was only about 2 miles from home and he drove a lod pickup most of time anyway. The car needed a headliner and the driver's side seat was worn but other wise the car was pretty nice with the exception of the paint beginning to oxidize and the red tape striping was peeling. So on Feb. 15, 1992 I became the second owner of this first year 3rd Gen, and I've done it all in that car. I drove it the rest of the way through high school, and then through college, modding it as I went along. Since then I've owned 6 more 3rd Gens including the 89 RS I have now. Besides my 2 current cars, I have had 2 83 Z28's, an 85 Z28, 87 IROC and an 89 Formula. The two I have now I plan to keep, and if I did have to get rid of one it would my 89. I'm going to try to keep the 82 from now on. It was my first car and I've had it over 9 years, so its like part of the family. From time to time I see old high school buddies and they start talking about that old black Z28 I used to have, and most of the them are surprised to hear that I still have it. Even though I am in the process of putting a 600HP 383 in it, It still has a full interior that is show quality. The body is flawless and even though I race it, I keep it clean and polished and show it at local car shows. I even have a few plaques and trophies to prove it. Some people say I've ruined my car, but it is like I want it. I plan in the near future to change the car over to EFI and compete in EFI drag racing events and still show the car. Not many people do the street/show/strip thing, but I don't want an all out Race car that I don't what it looks like and I don't want a show car that I can't drive or race, so that's waht I like about MY 3rd gens.

A story from my childhood: One day in 1982 (I was 12) me and some friends were playing around at this one kids house. The kids older brother had just gotten a brand spanking new Z28 which was parked in the driveway. For some reason, I picked up a plum from their yard (they had a plum tree) and threw it at the kid. I missed and hit the car! The kid ran in the house to tell his brother. I jumped on my bike and started hauling *** down the street. I was three blocks away when this awesome car comes flying past me. He pulls off a perfect movie stunt swerve and cuts me off. I thought the guy was gonna kill me! He just gets out and says, "Do you have $1000 for a new paint job?!" I almost started crying! He then got back in the car and drove away. He scared the **** out of me, which I think was his intention. The memory of looking over my shoulder as I peddled as hard as I could and seeing this incredible car baring down on me stayed with me for years.

Basically, I like the way they look.

Besides a 67-69 camaro.. the 3rd gen ahs the best body.. As I've seen here many people are saying ever since they were a little kid.. well the truth is for a while I liked the 92 mustang give me a break I as in 5 or 6th grade in 92.. I also really liked the look of the camaro.. but every year as I approached the age of 16 the mustang became uglier and uglier and the camaro started looking better and better and sounding nicer, so as soon as I had the cash when I turned 18 I bought me my camaro.. now I'm going onto 20... getting ready to start year 3 of being a camaro owner.. and I wouldn't trade it for the world.

Don't get upset about this, but, I don't like 3rd gens. I like 91-92 Firebirds.

When I was a senior in high school, in 1991, I was over at a friends house. His mom's best friend pulled in the driveway and parked a brand new 91 Firebird right in front of me. I thought it was the coolest car I had ever seen. Ever since then I've wanted one. Now that I have one, I'm never going to be without.

I watched Smokey and the Bandit for the first time about a year before I bought my car _had_ to have a Trans Am (mostly cause of what people think when you say you have a T/A). I looked at a mostly second gens, but then i saw a GTA for around 3K and figured: Why not get a car that would be more reliable and faster?

So now I have my GTA, and I love it. But a fourth gen might be nice.

------------------
89GTA5spd – Came: Completely Stock w/ 3.42’s, rear disks, dual cats, LB9 305, T5, bad paint & interior. I did: Conical K&N w/cust piping, TPIS Airfoil, Ported Plenum/Runners, TB By-pass, Home Made AFPR, MSD Cap/Rotor, Jet Fan Switch, 180 T-stat, , Flowmaster 3” Cat-back, Eibach 1” Drop, KYB’s, Hotchkis STB, BFG 255 Comp T/A’s, AC Plugs, NOS TPI (custom) Kit , Sony CD Deck, Orion Amp, Fosgate 10’s, 1991 GTA interior, new paint. I have but have yet to put on: Alston Bolt on SFC’s, Paxton SN-92. Soon: Mallory Hyfire, Autometer Phantom Elec. FP guage, N20 Guage, Boost Guage, Fuel Pressure Safety Switch, Bottle Blanket. Not So Soon: L98 w/ alum heads. Always a work in progress..

let em add my six sence by saying first of all i like the body style but i also like the fact the when your buying one there pretty reasonable, plus these alot of space in teh engine compartment so you can actually do most of the work yourself with screwing up other stuff and parts are easy to come buy plus assuming you have a v8 or gan get decent perforamce out of it for reasonable prices. I wanted one growing up and at the age of 20 i got mine. next to the first gen camaro's i tihnk the thirdgen's look the best.

Knight Rider!!!

I wanted a firebird but ended up with a camaro as my first car (at 17) with a v6.

OK.... Had that for a long time so I still wanted the damn firebird, but really wanted a GTA. Couldn't pass up a deal on a zz4 with 8,000 miles formula 350 with shot interior and slippin trans for $1200. (This is a gm crate with 8,000 miles and I saw the original owner trough the purchase and swap....)

Then again, in an act of denial maybe... I painted the whole damn thing '91 corvette white.

Someday I'll have that knight rider...........................

By the way, i'm 26, still own the camaro (ready for a 3rd refresh on the paint this summer.... Project silver streak look is what i'm after, the six has to go, but with 170,000 miles on the original 6 w/o ever going in the valve covers, trans... It runs just as good as the day I got it

It just has no power, but I will regret it if I get rid of it.. (My first real car)

Sh:t I remember driving to high school in it, and it's not beat at all (mint interior...) I took care of it.

It took care of me... and I still drive it MOST of the time.

Why (late model year)3rd gens?? because they are in my opinion the BEST combination of PURE AMERICAN MUSCLECAR performance and looks/styling that you can get!! Optimum good looks, optimum handling, optimum comfort and great overall performance.

That's why I own a black on black '91 Formula with T-Tops!

This is my story of my 86 Z28 which i love to death!!! before i had the Z i had an 86 ford thunderbird and it was an aight car by my good friend had the Z28 anyway it was the middle of my 11th grade year. One day driving i got hit by a guy with no license and it totaled the thunderbird. i was so mad b/c it was my car and now i would be walking for a while. anyway my friend still had the camaro and i was working to save up money for a new car everyday i looked in the paper and found nothing. then my told my friend sell me the Z and he was like maybe. so two months passed and finally i coviced him to sell me the Z. Since he was selling me the Z28 he went a bought an 86 mustang with a tranny that shakes. Now he wishes that he didn't sell me the Z28. Why do i love thirdgens because they look great when taken care of. chicks like them. i love my car if im pissed about something i take a ride in my camaro and it makes me feel all better it is like one of those undescriable feeling in the world that u can only experiece and can't explain.

Wow, these are some great stories! I hope I can compare..

Ever since the age of 12, I was in love with Chevrolet (nothing in my family but Fords, I guess it was an act of rebellion..). I would stare at the Corvettes, and think "Wow, that's a fast looking car.. but it doesn't scare me." Then, I would look at a black IROC and think, "Whoa! That thing is a monster!" So, when the infamous age of 16 came around, I picked up an '86 2.8L Camaro w/ T-tops. Good paint, great interior, for about $2000. Never really had too many problems with it, but the thrill outweighed everything. Even though it was a V6, it was MY V6. I got nothing but compliments on the car, but something was missing.. the car really didn't have the "edge" that I wanted out of it.. I needed the rocker panels. So, instead of just buying the ground effects, I sold the '86 to a friend, and bought an '89 RS.

I Tossed on a $2500 show-quality paintjob, and I was set. This car was show-perfect, perfect mint charcoal-black interior, no rips, no burns, no smudges. It even smelled new. Everything down to the emblems was replaced, this car was better than the day it rolled of the assembly line. Compliments everywhere I went in it, I loved that car.

Then I got the bug.. I had to have a V8. Not just any V8, I had to have the 350.. and it had to be a '92. So, I went on a quest for a '92 Z28. I had a few requirements, it had to have the heritage package (red w/ black stripes), leather, and the L98. I searched for months, turning up empty handed. I was discouraged, and frustrated. In the heat of the moment, I put a down payment on a 2000 Silver Z28, fully loaded the day before Labor Day. The salesman told me to come back the next day, and I could take the car. I drove home, started fiddling on the PC.. I began to check all of my autotrader links (which were very, very outdated..) When I stumbled upon one I remember bookmarking, it was a '91 Z28, black (I was desperate, I was about to take anything!).

When I clicked on the link, I found out the ad for the '91 Z28 had expired.. and what had replaced it was a '92 HERITAGE Z28 -- WITH ALL THE OPTIONS I WANTED! In a panic, I called the owner, asked if I could come over and check it out ASAP. He lived about 100mi away, but I knew this was fate. Grabbed a friend, drove over and instantly fell in love. It was perfect. I gave him the money, and drove it home. Went to the dealership and got my deposit back the next day. Nothing could express the joy I felt (and still feel) for this car.. It has filled a part of me that needed to be filled, I will never part with this car.. ever.

On a side note, I later found out this car was one of 7 designated SLP cars in 1992. #5 to be exact.. good things come to those who wait. How's that for fate??

I have to agree with everyone else...3rd gen Camaros are absolutely one of the most beautiful body styles around. A buddy of mine named Jud Mercier rubbed off on me when I was a freshman in high school...he was a HUGE Chevy fan. He helped ignite my obsession for Camaros, which led to me buying a 1983 Camaro in 1992 (my junior year of high school). I adored that car...I had it painted black and put IROC wheels on it. I'll have to add some pics of it to my web site soon. It had a 305 and an automatic with over 100K miles, but it ran great.

I had a big decision to make at the end of my senior year in 1993...put a new drivetrain in the Camaro or buy something else that will make it through my college years at Mississippi State. Stupid me, I sold it and bought a Nissan pickup. I regretted that over and over, but I have to admit, the 'ol ***** pickup was super-dependable for over 5 years. I was determined to eventually either get my old Camaro back or buy another one.

Well, fast-forward to June 2000. Graduated from college, married, and still driving a Nissan. I had already told my wife that I was gonna start looking for a Camaro. As fate would have it, I was checking out the cars for sale on thirdgen.org and I found EXACTLY what I was looking for: a 1992 RS, red with black stripes (heritage pkg), gray interior, 305, and a 5-speed. I called the guy and requested pics, fell in love with it, worked out a price over the phone, met him in North Carolina (I'm in Alabama), bought it, and drove it home.

I sold the Nissan and now use the Camaro as my daily driver, putting about 350 miles a week on it. I thoroughly enjoy all the looks and compliments I receive on the car and can't wait to finish making all the mods I have planned! Owning a 3rd gen is a blast...it just doesn't get any better than this (ha).

Well, I've always loved thirdgen cars especially Firebirds. I bought my first one on December 11, 1989 when I was a senior in high school. It was just a plain white Firebird with a 2.8 V6. I still have that car but its now a 500+ horse beast and the toughest looking f-body I have ever seen. I currently own eight thirdgen cars. The more I think about it I feel they may be the best all around cars ever made. When you combine style, handling, braking, and performance potential along with the ease of modifying these cars I don't know if any car can stack up.

I was born in 81 when the cars first hit the lots so I think that my car and I grew up together and met five years ago. My dad ahad a 68 firebird as his first car so ever since I saw a thirdgen F body I wanted one. I loved nknight rider and wanted a car just like it. Ever since I saw my firebird I have been in love. My girlfriend thinks that if she had an engine or something like that then she would get more attention. I love this car. It looks great, easy to get parts for and work on and is still the best car in my mind no matter what anyone says.

I WILL NOT EVEN TRY TO TOP THOSE STORIES. THEY ARE ALL GREAT. INSTEAD HERE ARE 10 REASONS TO OWN A THIRD GEN OR FOR THAT MATTER ANY CAMARO OR FIREBIRD.

1. BEST LOOKING SPORTS CAR FOR THE BUCKS ON THE ROAD. MAKES A POOR MAN LOOK RICH.

2. SOLID PERFORMING ENGINES.

3. EASY TO WORK ON AND MODIFY.

4. A HEAD TURNING CAR. EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT IT IS. NO ONE EVER SAYS,"WHAT KIND OF CAR IS THAT".
5. PURE POWER IF MODIFIED THE RIGHT WAY. CAN BE FASTER THAN MOST COP CARS AND MUSTANGS IF DONE RIGHT.

6. BEAUTIFUL INTERIORS. LOT'S OF VARIETY IN THE STYLES. VERY SPORTY GIVING YOU THE FEEL YOU ARE AT INDY OR RT. 66.

7. GOT TO LOVE THE CONVERTIBLES AND T TOPS. MAKES CAR EVEN MORE SWEETER IN THE SUMMER WHEN IT'S HOT AND THE TOPS ARE OFF.

8. CLASSIC BODY LINES. MOST 3RD GENS IF PAINTED RIGHT ARE CLASSICS. ADD SOME TINT AND WHEELS AND THEY BECOME SUPREME.

9. SURE FIRE WAY TO CATCH THE OPPOSITE SEX ATTENTION.

10. A CAR THAT WILL NEVER DIE, EVEN IF CHEVY STOPS MAKING THEM. THAT'S WHEN THE VALUE WILL SHOOT UP. HOLD ON TO YOURS BECAUSE I AM NOT SELLING MINE.

After reading all this I have to post!
I've been into thirdgens since I was 15. I was a huge fan of the zr-1 vettes but when I figured I could never had one that became the dream car and still is (nothing like a built and blown LT5). So I went for best looks and most potential. The first car I got to drive was a v6 91 firebird bright red. I loved the looks but that was a dog. I wasn't into cars much so I thought a v8 had to be better ANYthing other than teh v6. So I bought an 86 sport coupe for like 2 grand. It had plenty of power for me at the time, then I just needed more hp but this time I found another red thirdgen with plenty of power. 91 RS L03, sure it was a dog but the throttle was a lot smoother and I loved the simplicity of TBI. I bought that for $3750 (asking was $4800, haha) and sold my 86 for 2 grand but had spent 2 grand in a tranny rebuild . Oh well, so now I have the L03, I had to get a tranny rebuild on that also, more down time. Anyways, look at it now, I'm a soph in college and have enough power....for now, and it's still got GOBS of potential.
What other car do you know could have a swap from an i4 to a v8 big block with few complications? The idea of the f-body is great except for the uni-body. I wish they would have come with sub frame connectors. The other thing I would have liked to have seen come from GM is a better rear. Like an 8.5" or something with a little more beef.
All in all it's a great car for the street and track, best bang for the buck hands down.
One other little problem I have with them:
WHAT THE %$&# IS UP WITH THE METRIC AND STANDARD BOLTS ON OUR CARS?????? It's such a PITA finding the right wrench because you're not sure if it's standard or not. For the most part the engine and drive tran are standard but if I remember correctly, the motor mount weren't and neither are the suspension parts. Every other interior screw is phillips or 7mm .
Still I would have liked to have had all standard.

Car: too many ...
The first car I ever drove was a 1989 Camaro RS ... and I still drive it today. When I just got into highschool, my mom decided she wanted to get a new car. She wanted to get something big because she figgured i might be 'barrowing' it (hehe!!) and I am kinda tall (6'5" now). We looked all over the dealerships for a big car. I didnt fit into any of those imports!!! I'll never forget when I saw the RS. It was used with about 80k miles on it and it was only $3,500. After we heard it start up (it had flowmasters and no cat) she loved it (right on mom!!) and it was hers. She let me barrow it a few times to goto the store and stuff and I loved driving it. When I was in 11th grade and I finally got my liscanse, she gave the car to me and I loved it. Did a few things to it (hypertech stage 2 chip, grant steering wheel, got it tinted with legal tint) but didnt have enough money to do anything really cool. I drove the car through the rest of my highschool years and it was a blast. Its not really that fast and its not that pretty (with crappy RS wheels and some misc dents and rust) but I love the car. When 2000 finally rolled around, I got a good job and bought my own truck (s10) and gave the Camaro back to mom. She drove it really crazy like and I think lots of people were (and still are!) scared of that loud maroon camaro running around town. Now im selling my truck so I got the Camaro back and I bought my mom another car. Now I'm going to be doing some cool stuff to it (new wheels, new paint, new tint) but im saving all my cash for a project 92 Camaro z28 that I wanna make completely unreal.

So hows that for ironic?? Fell in love with the car over 5 years ago but i still drove it into work today. and even though its ugly right now I still think its one of the better looking cars in the parking garage at work.

Why do I drive a thirdgen Camaro? Quite simply, affordable T-tops, that's right plain and simple. I wanted T-tops in a car, and the coices are limited, even with GM producing the most models with T-tops. To be honest, I prefer the body styling os an early secondgen Camaro, or an early 70's Chevelle, and of course the C-2, 3, and 5 Corvettes. (I just like those rounder, sexier shapes) In 20 years of driving I've owned a lot of cars, muscle cars, big cars, mostly Chevys, a couple Blue Ovals, a Mopar, and one Import (not Japanese, but European) my other car right now is an '85 Volkswagen Jetta GLi (that car is a blast to drive) and this is my first thirdgen Camaro. I'm diggin' the T-tops and the car will be sweet once I do the body work, and get it painted. Will I own another thirdgen? probably, but I think maybe an '86-'87 Monte SS (another GM T-top car) may be in the cards for me next. If I could have one of my cars back, it would be my '68 Buick LeSabre, 225 inches from bumper to bumper, total pimp ride, all black and chrome, limo black windows, and a Buick 455 sitting under the hood. I like my '86 Camaro well enough, it makes my top five list of cars I've owned, but not number one. Maybe if it were an IROC, or a Z, or even a V8 RS it would rank higher, but nothing will suplant the LeSabre at #1 (I love big cars)

Pioneer DEH-P4000 head unit
Pioneer 6X9 Tri-Ax speakers
Jensen 8" dual voice coil sub

Nightshades spray tint)

(Hopefully these lists will grow quickly)

I like to think of it as a empty canvas

with all honesty, i am sad when i see 90% of our cars out on the road because most people that own em' dont appreciate em, and there were so many made that every single piece of white trash out there owns one that is falling apart. but its the 10% of them that keeps me here, cuz they can either be really bad or the tightest cars on the road.

Just a side note, if I had an LO3 TBI engine like yours I'd throw it out for a carb...and that's only if I couldn't find a TPI setup! The LO3 only came factory with 170 HP....they got 4 cylinders making 250+ HP now!! Just my opinion tho'!

i agree. Chevrolet should have let the beast out on the lo3 engine too.

Unknown, I couldn't agree with you more!! There should be some element of PRIDE in owning a piece of American musclecar/sportscar heritage!!!

Seeing some people in their 3rd gens makes me want to puke! and others p!ss me off! ****! I'm FAR from rich, but damn if I'm gonna let my car go to ****. If we could just put a tax on all those 3rd gen owners out there that have pieces-o-****, I think this economy would get alot better QUICK!! LOL!!

Remember, I damn sure aint rich, but I KNOW what the f*ck I got in my driveway!

I've loved these cars since I was about 7 years old. First time I actually saw one up close was when a neighbor had a relative over that drove a 1984 Trans Am, it was black with the gold graphics. I was mesmorized by the ballsy looking body design and the huge black patches of rubber and all the tire shredding noise he made when he left. The Knight Rider TV series helped a lot, too. I said to my friend that day "I'm gonna have one of those cars when i'm old enough!" Later on after high school, one of my friends acquirred his mom's '86 Firebird, he got the body all fixed and repainted, and I helped him put a system in it. He loaned it to me sometimes like when my truck broke down, and I really got hooked then, both by the looks, the bit of performance it had and the acoustic response. After I moved to Florida, my wife bought the '91 Firebird and I wound up driving it more than my rusty old Buick. So that's when I found my '84 Trans Am, the car I had only been able to dream of since I first saw one. The '84 impressed one of my friends so much, he went out and found an '85 Trans Am for himself. And like my neighbor's relative, I leave the same tire patches on my street when I go home to visit. The neighborhood kids love it!! They always want to hear the engine rev up. I wonder if any of them are thinking what I was thinking when I was their age.....

I first fell in love with the 3rd generation camaro in 1991 when my aunt bought her car. It was a 1989 RS with the 305 TBI. I was only 13 then but i knew and always told her that car is gonna be mine someday. I would wash her car whenever she wanted. Over time the car got looking bad and badder. Then one day (1999) she asked if i wanted to buy it. I told her YES! but i needed to get the money 2500. When i got the money like a month later i went to her. SHe broke my heart and told me she had sold it. 2 months later she got the car bak bcuz her bro-in-law could not pay for it anymore. I got the car for 2500 and i am very proud of it. The first day i drove it all day and washed it and waxed it. Last month i took it to get painted. It is gonna look awesome. My aunt still tells me she regrets selling it. Ha Ha too bad. My car is awesome. I love 3rd generation.

Two words...

"A musclecar, by definition, is a powerful and sporty vehicle that must be able to spin its tires at will. The Firebird Trans Am is capable of laying down twin black streaks of rubber several hundred feet long. We wanted to be sure it could, so we did it a half dozen times in the name of automotive science."-MotorTrend

Well, I guess I'd better chime in here, as well I've owned A LOT of cars in my time, from Blazers, a big block 11-sec 4sp Chevelle, 12-sec Nova, an Impala SS, and even (dare I say) a Geo Prizm; but nothing has compared to the feeling I get behind the wheel of my Formula. It's the best of the "new" and the best of the "old". Performance, styling, ease of maintenance, abundance of modifications, computer co-existance , and clean burning to boot! I've had my Formy the longest of any other vehicle (going on 6 years, now), and I won't trade it for the world!
It started for me, as a youth, with Smokey and the Bandit (as with a few of us). Dad brought home a "Bandit" in the late fall of '77. You know, Black, gold trim, honeycombs, 6.6 liter. Riding in that car was IT for me. I wanted it (still do, kinda). My first 3rd gen was an '83 V6 with the bird on the hood. Dark blue metallic. Nice ride, but it wasn't enough. Traded it for an '85 Recaro T/A. "Bandit" style. Black, gold trim, 5sp L69. I loved that car, but so did the ex....... .....anyway, took me a few years, but I found a used Formula 350 with a lot of miles, and the rest is history!

The second part of my story is one that many will appreciate: recently I had to change my fuel pump, and cut my brand new exhaust system to pull the tank. While at a shop, getting it welded back up, saw an '85 T-top T/A wasting away against the back fence. As I inquired as to its demise, I KNEW I had to save it from the wrecker, so I bought it! Here's the kicker: it's an original 305TPI auto T/A w/122,000, all it needed was the battery charged, and I paid $350.00 for it!!! Went to the DMV to take care of the paperwork, and DROVE IT HOME THIS AFTERNOON!!! After looking into/driving the LS1's, bang for buck, convenience of maintenance, and overall appearance, I'm hooked on 3rd Gens!

Car: 1986 IROC
Engine: 355 Tpi
Transmission: 700r4
Axle/Gears: 9 Bolt 3.27
I first fell in love in 1986 when I saw a brand new (at the time) IROC-Z race a 5.0 in New York. The IROC was a black T-top car with gold graphics. It killed the 5.0 through the intersection and scratched second gear and pulled away. It sounded and looked so mean compared to the docile mustang. I agree with everyone on this particular topic. Both the Firebirds and the Camaro in the third generation are the best looking cars around. Thats why I own one, and my friends (mostly) own them too. My buddy with his 89 GTA, and I like to pick on my friend with his Rustang. Even with a 347 stroker in it, he has a hard time keeping up with us. Either at the drag strip, or the road course.

1986 IROC-Z Black t-top, soon to have nasty AFR headed, tuned port 350

Car: 1994 Trans Am
Engine: 5.7L LT1
Transmission: 6-speed
I first saw 3rdgens in 1986 while visiting the States and instantly fell in love with them. I still remember how much brother and I used to ogle them, especially my mom's cousin's '86 Z28 w/ T-tops. I forgot all about them unitl I came back here to go to college. I saw a few nice looking Camaros and it all came back to me - I knew I had to have one. IROCs and 91-92 Zs are the meanest looking cars on the road, period. There is no doubt about it. So the search began. I knew I had to have a TPI car. I found a lot of trashy thirdgens, most of them V6s and RSs until I saw my car in a dealer's lot. New red paint, chrome rims, and near mint interior, this one was mine. I bought the car a few weeks later in October '99.

Reasons for wanting a thirdgen:
- Awesome looks
- Awesome handling
- more powerful than most other cars on the road

Reasons for keeping it:
- Reliable
- reasonably inexpensive to maintain
- just flat out cool!

'88 IROC 305 TPI
Crappy 700R4 slushbox
Gutted airboxes
180 degree T-stat
Advanced base TPS voltage
Relocated IAT sensor
Momo steering wheel (gotta luv it)
Ram-air setup coming soon
Flowmaster muffler (puke)
Taylor SpiroPro wires
Accel cap and rotor
Ported plenum
Kills: '94 Z28, Olds Aurora V8, bunch of Mustangs, T-birds, ricers, and others who assumed a 12 year-old car would be too slow.

My camaro was kind of an impulse buy. My first car was a '70 nova that I bought from the original owner with 36,000 miles in almost new original condition. I drove it for about 2 months and decided that I didn't want to put alot of miles on it because you don't see too many completely original cars like that. I decided to buy another car and just keep the nova in the garage so I started looking for something similar. I noticed a nice looking '84z 2 miles from my house and stopped to look at it. It had a 305 with a 5 speed and it was in really good condition. I talked to the owner and we worked out a deal and it was mine. Later that day I saw a sweet '87 IROC with leather and talked to the guy that owned it and he said he had put a new zz4 crate 350 into it and it was $5000, too bad I had just bought my car that morning! About 2 months after I bought my car I was driving down a straight road and when I got to the turn at the end I discovered that the car would not turn. I had had a blowout while going into the turn and the car just went straght through a fence into the field on the side of the road. I ripped out a nice big tree stump and messed up the front A arm assembly and a bunch of other suspension components. I also scratched a bunch of paint off the front and ruined the front fenders. We had it towed to a shop and they said to total it but I decided to fix it. Within a week I had it back on the road and driving fine, but it has taken me up until now to completely fix the body damage. I am getting it repainted in 2 weeks and this summer I am dropping in a 350, so I will finally have my badass 3rdgen again. I don't think I would have worked so hard to fix the car if it wasn't a camaro, I just am so attached to the car I couldn't bear to see it in the junkyard.

I remember back in 83 I saw an ad of the Firebird, man even though I was only like 7 or 8 years old I fell in love. Then when I was like 17 I passed by this house and saw a 78 Trans Am and I loved it!! I thought these cars were damn cool so I looked into all Fbodies and like em all. So I bought the 78 TA, two years later I bought an 81 Camaro berlinetta, three years later bought an 88 Formula 305, a year later I picked up the 85 Firebird SE. I sold the T/A and gave away my Berlinetta but my thirdgen Birds will never go away.

I actually was going to buy a used 94 Z28( yeah the one with the cool headlights cause the new ones are dorky looking ) but I thought I'd save the money and do an L98 or LT1 swap on the Formula . As for the 2.8 SE, looking foward to begin the 3.4 transplant!!

Anyways back to the topic, I like these cars cause they handle great, look just plain MEAN!!!!, perform great and with minor tweaking you get god kicked you in the a$$ performance!!!

My story as to why I love the Thirdgeneration
camaro's and firebird's is very similar to others on this board. It started In High School, I wanted a camaro so bad I could taste
it, however being 16 with no job and no money
I had to wait. Instead I was handed down my father's ford ranger (full size). I paid him with the money I had made from mowing lawn's in the summer. I bought the truck because it was cheap and in High School having wheels is everything. However I still craved for the camaro. After High School I started college
still driving that Lead tank truck. When one night I returned home from college to see a white camaro parked in my parents driveway.
The camaro was an all white 86 Z28, after staring in ah at this beautiful beast I went
inside to find out that my parents had helped my brother to buy the camaro. He was a Junior
in High School at the time. Since that night
I became even more obessed with getting my own
camaro. Well fate sometimes has a twisted way of working. That summer my brother let a 14 year old girl drive the Z28 (I'll bet he was thinking with his other head) The girl put the Z right into a tree. The Z28's front end was destroyed. Luckily,(for my brother) the girls
parents agreed to help my brother buy another
car. However I decided that the car could be saved so I bought it from my brother for a $1000 bucks. The engine had not been damaged and had recently been rebuild, so I stripped
everything off the front. I put in a new radiator, front I-beam and bumper. A new hood (with no louves) and new windshield. Then for a twist added the 91-92 Z28 fin to the back for a little more style. Adding the finishing touch with a new paint job. The car looked aswesome. People would stare everwhere I went.
My brother used the money that he had received from me and the girls parents to buy a wicked 85 black IROC. Buy this time he was a senior in High School and was preparing for college.
He had decided to attend the same Unviresity that I was at. We found a House to rent for the summer near campus, that's where the real fun begans. Every night we would hit Broadway (that's the main drag in town) scoping for chicks and mustangs to burn. My white Z28 glistened in the moon light like a babe magnet. That car has helped me to get laided on many occasions, but not only that its the way you feel when you drive it, powerful, cool and free. (sorry for almost writing a book here)

I realize this post is over 6 months old, but I have to reply. This is a pretty long reply, so I apologize. Ever since I was 6 I have been in love with the 3rd Gen. Camaro. 3 months before my 16th birthday, my uncle gets a bright red '82 Z28 on his car lot. My cousin is driving the hell out of this car, and loving every minute of it. The first time I see this car, I fall in love with it. 3 days before my birthday, he tells me it is sold as he drives off, squealing the tires all the way home. After taking my test for my license, me and my dad pull up and as he opens up the garage door, that Z28 is staring me in the face. I couldn't believe it!!!
Well, after a few yrs. of college, I joined the military. A little while after boot camp, I drove past a Chevy dealership near Chicago. I saw a forest green 92RS with T-tops. I had never seen a 3rd Gen. Camaro that was this color, and fell in love with it as soon as I saw it. Being a stupid 19 yr. old, I stopped by and offered the dealer a price. A few days later I was driving that beautiful car off the lot. Once my parents found out, I got the *** chewing of a lifetime, but it was well worth it. I am planning on keeping that car and adding a few upgrades in the near future. I have gotten tons of compliments on that car, and although my opinion may be a little biased, I think it's one of the best looking 3rd gen's. on the road.

Wow tons of replies to this topic, but unfortunately my story isn't as great. I'm currently still 16, no license . But anyways less than 2 weeks ago I became the third owner of a 1988 Camaro IROC vert. Simply beautiful car, I love how aggressive the car looks, as if it were doing 60 just standing still. Although I didn't get the full blown 350 as I had hoped (money problems), I ended up getting the 305 instead, but still it's a beast and I love it because it's MY beast.

To be totally honest though I had been looking into the import car market more so than the thirdgens, such as the Nissan 300ZX and RX-7's, test drove lots of em but they never had that thing that I was looking for. One day I was just looking through autotrader as usual and decided to check out the camaros, first link was the 88 vert. I called up a friend and drove down there that day and fell in love with it, right price, good body, many new parts, basically in great shape, needed some elbow grease but I was willing to put in the time. So I went back to the guy the following day with my father to let him take a look at it, and boy was that a shocker. He inspected the car for a full two hours, no test drive or anything, he fell in love with it right there, made an offer and it was mine. MY DAD ACTUALLY LIKED THE CAR!!!!!!!!!!!! Thats something which I have yet to figure out, but who cares, the car was mine. So we arranged a drop off date about 2 days later and the guy dropped it off at my house due to no license plates at the time and it sat in my driveway for a whole week. I'll tell ya, longest week of my life, until yesterday plates FINALLY came in and I went on the drive, PURE BLISS, it was the most memorable ride I will most likely ever take, top down and everything.

So to basically answer the question it's because of it's massive power, the great sound from the big 8's, and of course the compliments. The car sat in my driveway for a whole week, and everytime I was out in the driveway working on the car I got at least 2 comments from total strangers, honks, whistles, one guy even stopped his car to compliment it!! Oh yea, the girls seem to like it too . Well anyways I'm just thrilled to have my own camaro, just can't wait till I get my license though, soon! And also the thirdgen is already a classic in my mind. Everyday some teenager will be picking up his used camaro/TA from someone in hopes of gaining memories as you all have enjoyed

Quick Reply: Y do you like third gens??
