Just got my new hood louvers. How to I attatch them???

Hey all. My old set of hood louvers was cracked all over the place, and when driving, a peice flew off. Pissed me off, so i parked my car, and ordered a new set.

Anyhow, everyone nicely posted pictures for me, and so i ordered them by GM part number. Now, there are these little plastic pegs on each one, which fit through the hood holes. They are hollow. How the hell do i get these things on my car? Do i need to now order some plactis screw things from GM or something? The last pair of louvers which were broken, were hotglued down to my hood (really ****ed up the paint getting them off) so that isn't an option.

I just need to know if anyone here knows what i can do to keep these on after i get them on the hood. im sure these pegs do something...

Thanks for any suggestions!

The original fasteners are stamped metal nuts. They are the kind that cut their own threads as they go on.They're available from GM but you probably could find them at a well stocked hardware store.

Stamped metal nuts?

Ok, I can check out a hardware store and see if they sell that type of thing, a nut which makes it own threads when it is screwed on. Now i see why the old pair didn't have any pegs left on it. Sounds like a recipe for disaster for me. : )

Thanks for the reply!

They are sold at autozone or probably any autoparts store, just find out the stud size and you will be set to buy them.

When you put the nuts on, lightly lube the hollow plastic studs, which will make mounting the nuts easier. Also, one of the reasons these studs break so easily, in my opinion, is because they're tightened too securely in the first place. Snug them up only enough to make a water-tight connection (the orginal GM fasteners, as I recall, have a soft rubber bushing to seal out water. Should you consider buying non-GM fasteners, dap the aftermarket with silicone or something else that would make the connection waterproof. By the way, the studs are fragile enough that I don't slam my hood anymore. I've had the new louvres in for better than a year, and so far I've experience no difficulties.

Ug, well, nobody sells anything other than 5/8ths studs here. Best fit i could find was a 7MM course nut. threaded the first louver with no problems with no problems, but when I did the second louver, snapped off one of the plastic pegs half-way! Grrr... Now about all i cna figure out to do would be to get a stubby wood screw, and a washer or two and mount that peg with that.

Why do these things have to be such a pain in the a§§ anyway? I did not see any part number to order any connecting studs or whatever, so i didn't order any. I figured that they would be already threaded.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! Ill post again once they are up.

GM calls the nut that attaches the hood louvers a stamped nut. It's p/n is 11502553. I see GM sells them in a pkg of 10. They are also known in the industry as a "speed nut". McMaster-Carr lists them as "flange-style locking speed nuts". They sell a standard and thread cutting style. You want the thread cutting style which is for a non-threaded shaft. http://www.mcmaster.com/products.html

By the way, while we're on the subject, do the 91-92 blisters attach the same way? I noticed they have metal pegs.
