powder coating... am i getting ripped off?

Hey guys, well i just brought my aluminum engine accessory brackets, serpentine belt tensioner, and water pump in for sand-blasting and the brackets and the belt tensioner are getting powder-coated. The total with be $95. Does that seem reasonable to you? The guy hasn't started yet so I can still back out if need be.

I'm getting all of this done except for the two green brackets at the top.

yeah it does seem reasonable.. there are few websites that offer price quotes... I recently asked for a quote and it's within a reasonable amount...

the water pump I would not do if I were you, just grab yourself a can of engine paint... water pump can go at any moment...

Yeah but will the paint stick to the rusty pump?

Nothing will, if it isn't prepped right. They can't just throw a powder coat on top of the rust.

No what I wanted to do is get the pump sand blasted and I'd paint that with enamel since its not possible to powder coat that without ruining the seals in it... and I don't wanna rebuild it. But KNblazer said to leave it alone.

But you asked.....

And I answered.....
Nothing will, if it isn't prepped right. I guess including the extra comment about powder coat not sticking either was misunderstood by you.

His suggestion was in regards to not wasting your $ on a part that is semi-prone to failure.

And a water pump begin practically "invisible" anyways.....Nobody will be able to tell the difference anyways.

I dunno, this rusty orange pump stands out like a sore thumb under my engine bay IMO.
Yeah but he said to just throw engine paint on it. But since you're saying that nothing will stick to rust then I guess the answer would be no. I should've mentioned that earlier... sorry. But back to the original topic... anybody else's opinion on the price would be great.

Buy a new one ... they aren't that expensive... and umm depending on the charge alone for the water pump would factor in on the 20-30 minutes it would take you personally to sand it by hand... they are probably charging you like 25 dollars for the pump alone...

Re: powder coating... am i getting ripped off?

just degrease the pump, and have it blasted by the guy doing the powder work, they just prime and paint it now that its clean.

as for the price, that included blasting and coating, i dont think its a bad price at all, provided the guy does nice work.

i get my coating done for free

Re: powder coating... am i getting ripped off?

A new water pump from autozone is about 30$ I definately vouch for going that route, and painting it with an enamal high engine temp paint.

Re: powder coating... am i getting ripped off?

I own twin cities powder works here in MN and If its a reputable shop, thats a helluva deal.
Our shop rate for media blasting is 50/hr, 99% of all used auto parts need media blasting of some sort, cleaning, degreasing, and outgassing.
I just did a set of those fender supports for 10/each, h2o pumps go for 45 if new
the steering brace would be another 10-15, and the serp brackets, tensioner would run about 60 or so more. Those prices do not include blasting, just simple clean/prep.

so yes the price is good, but again.... are you getting what you pay for?
is it a guy with a hobby gun doing it at home, or a shop with experience, warranty, and quality work and product?

I am the most reasonably priced shop in MN, we also do our own media blasting in house (most outsource) certain metals require different medias, and prep than others. Not many shops want to get into that whole other industry, but to insure finish quality, I wouldn't trust anyone else
