Wheel Polishing
Just picked up an 88 Camaro for my son's first car. It has the five spoke wheels. I am wondering if the factory coating can be stripped and if they are all aluminum. If anyone has done this I would be grateful for some advise or steps that you have done. Thanks.

Re: Wheel Polishing
The wheels are not clear coated, but the silver, look like they have been dunked in paint type. I am not sure if it will work the same as the clear coated variety. My wife is a writer and would have a cow if she saw some of my spelling!
There is not much 3rd Gen action in Fargo ND so I am looking for all the help I can get! I did see a really nice conv. for sale @ car show for $7800. Not sure if that's a good deal or not. Only paid $800 for my son's. V6, t-tops, and no rust or body damage at all.

Re: Wheel Polishing
Here are a couple pictures of the car in question. It needs some work, but it's a good starter. As long as I know you guys are messing with me, then It's on!
Pictures will not upload. File size is to large. I will fix and retry.
Let's try again.

That beauty for 800 bucks? O_O
Try scrubbing the rims good with some proper rim cleaner, that always helps a lot. you can try polishing if that fails

Re: Wheel Polishing
It's going to be a little more work that I thought, but that's ok. The boys needs to bust some knuckles to be a man. The trans is shot. The previous owner, said he fixed some seals on it, well when he put the output shaft seal in it he messed up something cause now it leaks bad from the front. That dang 2.8 is driving me nuts. I think I have it running good, it starts running rough again. I have already replaced a bunch of broken exhaust manifold bolts, a few vac lines. But I guess for $800 I will deal with it.

Re: Wheel Polishing
I can't find the pics, but those style rims look really good painted black with the outer edges polished. Something like this:

Might save you some polishing as well.

Re: Wheel Polishing
Scorpner thanks for the pics, and the ideas on the wheels. We are thinking of adding black Heritage style stripes, so the black wheels would look great. My son is getting after me to work on the car more. The weather is starting to get warmer here and my garage is not heated so we can get some more done before we build the new garage.

Re: Wheel Polishing
if you are going to polish them get the wheel smoothing and polishing kit from Eastwood I use their stuff as much as I can. saves time and alot of hassle over doing by hand. that way you are using a drill mounted bufing wheel and it makes it go so much faster.

Re: Wheel Polishing
No problem! Just to be clear I can't take credit for the idea. I came across the pictures on here a while back just after I let a set of mine go. I think about it every time I see those rims now. lol
Hope to see you do the same.

Re: Wheel Polishing
All i can say copyfixr is that I hope your son has a 4x4 to use in the winter, because the camaro will be worthless in the winter. I'm in NE and I know first hand.
Nice buy though!

Re: Wheel Polishing
JStoltz is correct...The Eastwood kit is excellent...I refinished mine. Took about 1 full week worth of time to strip & clean my Formula snowflake wheels. You can recoat them with clear coat. I chose to leave mine plain & use Mothers Aluminum polish and then a nice general purpose wax.

Re: Wheel Polishing
jharrison5 I will probably let my son drive my trusty 90 Suburban. Bad thing for him is my wife works @ his school, so he can ride with her and park the Slowmaro for winter. I drove my 76 Trans Am in the winter and it has a 455 4spd and 4.11 posi, and it was surprisingly decent!
