Cling Wrap?

OK - not really kitchen cling wrap - never able to get that junk to stick to anything! But the plastic wrap that is used to wrap boxes on pallets - could one cover the front of their car with any hope of it staying on for a 6 hour highway ride? I have aero ground effects, and I could pull the ends through the aero holes and knot it up so that it would stay in place, or even remove the inner fenderwell plastic tabs and pull the wrap under and reinsert the tabs through the wrap.

I ask because the upcoming G14 in Atlanta - I have registered and reserved. But it's a 6+ hour drive (the wife will make it 8 hours easy), and I just got painted last year. The car has only on one highway trip since, and that was a 2 hour ride - the front was covered in bugs upon arrival -what a PITA to try and clean while at a car show! I gave up that day, but after a few hours of gently scrubbing, rubbing compound, and rewaxing, it's back to lusterous. I just don't want to have to do that again!

Thoughts on the plastic wrap idea? I'll try it out locally first, but I can't think of any bad effects of using it - can you?

With the exception of buying a bra, any other ideas?

{OK, so I have strange thoughts sometimes - love me or leave me! }

Re: Cling Wrap?

The problem I see is that any movement in the wrap can damage the paint more then bugs from the constant rubbing.

Sounds like more trouble then its worth. You would have to leave the grill open anyways to avoid overheating.....which means youll have to clean that no matter what. Me... Id just do some serious bug cleaning afterwards. I drove from northern N.C. to south Florida a week ago in my 92 RS and hardly had any bugs on it. Good luck whatever you try.

Re: Cling Wrap?

Funny you mentioned why you intended to use it as I will be giving it a try for the first time on the way up to G14.
It's the white film stuff (polyethylene) you see on the new cars as they leave the factory on the way to dealerships. It claims to be best used for a "temporary travel bra" though I have yet to test it at highway speeds for long distances. As Amorge stated even the tiniest bit of plastic flapping in the breeze will mar the paint and have the complete opposite of the intended effect.

It makes a god awful mess but a thin layer of petrolatum is another way. Just bring extra terry cloth towels and extra soap. For those outside of the deep south and say just a good coat a wax, you don't have a clue as to what we go through. Just be thankful

Except the grill is purely cosmetic on these cars. The air dam is responsible for redirecting air through the radiator. You can seal up the front bumper completely and still be fine as long as the air dam is intact.

I thought about that too ... the dust and dirt that gets trapped underneath would act like sandpaper the whole trip.

The Eastwood product is cool - but at only 6 inches wide, I'd think I'd need at least 2 rolls. Don't know if it's reusable, but with all the other cash my poor wallet has dished out this month getting ready, not sure it's an option. My brother works at a dealership - maybe he can hook me up for free.

Dman85 - look forward to seeing you there

Re: Cling Wrap?

I don't know if this will damage paint or not but I've seen people cover their front bumpers and the front of their hoods with that blue painting tape. It would look completely ridiculous but if it's saving you all that time from cleaning the bugs off, then it's worth it.

You might want to find out first though if it will damage your paint.

Good luck!

Re: Cling Wrap?

Why not use a bra, just for the ride, alot of guys complain about them rubbing the paint or doing major damage if left on for years, but ive seen newer Vettes driving down the highway with temporary protective bra's maybe you can find one like they have for thirdgens

Re: Cling Wrap?

Why not get one of the clear bras that are getting pretty popular now? Most tint installers have it and it will permanenty protect the paint.
