5thgen taillight mod

This is probably the next body mod that I may do. I will probably start out just making two metal enclosures the exact shape of the stock taillights and then french in the 5thgen light assemblies that way they can be a direct fit/ replacement and I could always easily switch back to stock lights. However, I don't know how I'm going to incorporate reverse lights...

Has anyone here on TGO done this mod yet?

Rad Rides did a 5gthgen taillight mod to their thirdgen Raptor project, but they molded the sheet metal to fit their custom body kit, mine would be more "stock" looking than theirs...

Here's some pics of what they did..

Re: 5thgen taillight mod

I'm not sure why anyone would want to put Corvette tail lights with down syndrome on their Camaro.

Re: 5thgen taillight mod

Obviously it's not to your liking, but I was looking for input on anyone who may have done a mod like this and / or thoughts about what I could do for reverse lights.

Re: 5thgen taillight mod

You could do flush clear lights like the 5th gen has, or build a 3rd pair of buckets with clear lenses to use as Reverse lights

So 3 lights per side instead of 2 with the extra's being reverse lights. Is that what you are saying?

Note:

While I don't like all the appearance stuff that some people do to their cars, I'm still interested in the fabrication work and the final result none the less.

Exactly.

Or I guess if one wanted to just do 2 lights per side....Get a clear lens for 1 of those? Not my cup of tea, but an option.

I bet there are already clear lenses made for 5th gens out there somewhere.

Is the back end of the car wide enough for three lights per side?

I dunno how wide those 5th gen lights are.

I know my GTA stock has 4 lights per side (2 are the Reverse Lights, 1 per side). My avatar shows my STS lights, lighting 3 per side.

Can also use the C4 Vette reverse lights. There around the lisence plate.

I dont want to cut into the bumper cover...

I do like the idea of C4 reverse lights though.

Can someone who is decent with photo-shop, mock a picture up of 5thgen taillights and C4 reverse lights onto the following pic?

Thanks and keep the ideas coming!

Here's a crappy MS-paint mock-up... I need a skilled photoshop guy to do this!

5thgen lights / C4 reverse lights

I matched up the sizes as close as I could..

Don't do it.....The angles if the lights don't match the angles of the body right. Maybe if they could be flipped upside down?

Please dont do this mod. Your car is georgous as it is. Doing this to your car would be like giving Megan Fox a mustache, and I think we all agree, she looks fine how she is...

Re: 5thgen taillight mod

LoL

Well, that's why I was going to make them a bolt-on (just like the factory lights) that way I could always swap them out back to factory.

I think the angle thing is just how rad rides made them into their housings. Also they are smaller than what Stephen photo-shopped, so it would yield a little more room for reverse lights than you would think. I wish I had a better, more straighter angled picture of the 5thgen lights to further show the point of view in reference.

If I had a 3rd & 5th gen Camaro handy to measure the lights....I could scale them closer to actual size.

Re: 5thgen taillight mod

New idea for reverse lights..

There is a billet license plate frame that has plate lamp and brake light at top/middle of frame. I could switch out the red lens for clear and use a LED strip inside for reverse lighting. Takes care of both plate light and reverse lights (in case there is no room for C4 reverse lights or other options).

Re: 5thgen taillight mod

This is closer to the size of the actual lamps. The angle of the lens will be tweaked to a better angle via the shaping of the metal housings that they will sit in.

Anyone care to take this pic and chop in some different reverse light options?

Those 2 filler panels on each side of the license plate are practically empty inside, so they could house a pair of Reverse lights.

Re: 5thgen taillight mod

If you try just cutting out holes in metal template that are the exact shape as stock taillights then might not work. The '10 Camaro tails look like they stick out a lot further in the bottom, this is why the rad rides thirdgen camaro has angled sheet metal in the back. If you would push back the '10 Camaro tails then maybe it would be possible but might not have enough room. I guess what I'm trying to say is maybe go out and find out Camaro taillight dimensions first, or at least buy only one tail.

Another thing to think about - if the lights are flipped upside down or not angled correctly, you may not have the proper amount light projecting in the right direction. It may not look right when they are turned on.

Nah; man... just wait 20 years until the 7th gen comes out, which will be a retro style of the 3rdgen and then you can bogart the tail light style then... the 5thgen rears just look odd.

I usually don't chime in too much on stuff like this, but goddamn, this picture looks RETARDED! Spend the money on your engine, or something else. Modding the tail lights 5thgen is a waste of time and money.

Re: 5thgen taillight mod

first off, megan fox has big toes for thumbs and it just creeps me out. second I think the 5th gen tails would look awesome and maybe you could use BMW side markers (the triangular pointy ones) on the outside of the 5th gen tails to counteract the opposing angles and make them reverse lights. I don't know if that would be legal though since I've never seen revers lights on the outer edge of a car.

also 1bad91z has put more into his engine and suspension and pretty much his hole car than almost everybody on here so i think he knows what he's doing here

I have to agree here with most of the other people who posted--DONT DO IT! The tail light angles just dont match the body lines of the car--it just doesnt look right.

If you can modify a stock tail light like you said it would look actually great. But no inverting the 5th gen tail lights. I donno, if you can pull this off I think it would look pretty good.

Re: 5thgen taillight mod

Wow! The hate factor is in full effect here!

For better reference, look at the picture I posted on post# 25.

That's a better idea of what it could look like (this particular picture is sized better and more correct to actual size). Also disregard the the angles of the lens's in that picture because the angles will straighten out with the shaping of the housings.

I DO agree that the photoshop with the BIG lights in there does look retarded, but that's only because the angles are still bad and they are WAY over sized in proportion to the housing.

On a side note:

The area I circled in yellow can be utilized for reverse lights with a clear flush mounted piece of plexi-glass covering that area and then smoked black (night-shaded).... Just an idea..

Well, also keep in mind they will be easily switchable back to the factory lights. The new housings will have studs in the same location as the stock lights and will fasten the same with the plastic factory wing nuts.

Re: 5thgen taillight mod

I say go for it. As long as you can put stock back on like you said. Because who knows, maybe you can pull of a trick design here, maybe fab a little bit of a different shaped bucket and it would look great. If you want to spend the time and money on it, like I said; go for it.
The last thing you want is to not try because people say it won't work and then have someone in the future pull it off, and all you can say is; "damn, that was my idea".
So do it!

Re: 5thgen taillight mod

Shame on anyone who is telling him to not to atleast go for it..any one paying attention will notice he said it'll be able to go back to stock. So if it doesn' work out, so what, he can hit undo and then it'll be no harm no foul.

Honestly with most people hating on it would make me want to go for it even more assuming this is what you feel like this is the next step for your car.

I'm confident that if your prepared to spend the money you can get it to work out to your liking. I'm biased toward the thirdgen anything, never the less interested seeing you do this mod and I'm damn sure every one will tune in to see the finished project, doubters included. Props.

[..and stephen don't be so sensitive..lol]

Re: 5thgen taillight mod

Theres a difference between hating on ppl for being different and a mod that actually doesnt look right on these cars. We all have our opinions but its like if someone wanted to put a ***** body kit on these cars....just doesnt look right and it should not be done.

Re: 5thgen taillight mod

I think 1st GEN taillights would fit the car WAY better, they would match the lines better, or you could do like I'm working on,

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/elec...aillights.html

Keep in mind I will do the name "Camaro" body color, not stark white, also, if thats your car, thanks for letting me chop it up!

Re: 5thgen taillight mod

That pic looks halfway decent! More 2ndgen looking than 1stgen though..

Gee...Thanks. Sorry that I tried to help you without any measurements for size comparisons, despite saying that already.

Stephen - what you did was great, all I did was size it down a bit from your photoshop and I do appreciate it! The pic with the lights oversized did make it look funny (kinda like a cat with BIG eyes)... but don't think that I don't appreciate your input as well as all the others, even the ones who despise the idea.

Please keep the comments and suggestions coming!

I like the 5thgen lights better than the vette lights, but I'm trying to come up with something different from the common (run-of-the-mill) stock lights..
