tire size to get for 17 inch rims.?

What tire size should I get for my 17 inch rims. I don't want to mess with the speedo gears so I need something close in size

40 series should keep you okay with 17's. I checked my speed with a radar at different speeds and my mph are only off from the radar between 1-3 mph depending on my speed.

Recommend

245-50-r17

you only need be concerned with speedo gears when you adjust the height considerably (the 1st large number)

Actually, the 255 is the cross section size and the 50 would be percentage of cross section for the height of the sidewall.

For example, a 245/50/16 tire is taller than a 245/45/16 tire since the 245/45 tire is using a sidewall that is 45% of the cross section. Both numbers are important, not just one or the other.

A 255/50 R17 would be too tall. You'd need a 45 or 40 series tire to maintain the 26" height.
