tips on removing tar spots

Anyone no an easy way to remove bug & tar marks. I've tried those "Bug & Tar" removers in stores but i have to clean the car about five times until the marks come off. Does dishwashing detergant work? Thanks for any help.

Dont use dishwashing liquid. It removes the wax from your car, and thats really bad for the paint! I havent had much luck with the bug and tar removers either, the best thing Ive found is some good car wash, and lots of elbow grease.

Put some thinner or solvent on an old rag and carefully wipe off the tar. Then wash and rewax the spot right away. I use this method not only on my show cars, but also on my dump trucks which get asphalt all over them. Never hurt the paint on any of my vehicles over the last 24 years (and the paintjob on my '86 is a 12K one), but remember, don't rub hard, you are trying to disolve the tar not scrub it off.

I imagine that WD-40 would work as well, but might need a bit more time to cut through the tar. I also use WD-40 to remove adhesive residue from my windows.

the use of bug&tar removers will strip the wax also
if the tar wont come off with a regular car wash, use a clay bar or just rub wax into the area, the wax will remove just about anything.
thats also useful when removing emblems that are attached with double sided tape; the wax strips the leftover sticky crap off

WD-40 does work, use it without the precision tube (red straw) use a tight-knit cloth...terry towels work but tend to leave fuzzies and deteriorate more quickly

I have used WD-40, but it takes off wax. I would only use it if I was planning on waxing soon. I don't know if it hurts paint though.
