Removing pink paint on wheels
Removing pink paint on wheels
Well I bought my 91 1LE finally. The car is absolutely cherry....minus the wheels. They have what used to be red paint...now faded pink. I plan on repainting the accents from pink to black. What and how is a good way to remove atleast the clear coat if even the paint?? I was thinking a scour pad and oven cleaner or laquer thinner. Any help would be appreciated.

A small paintbrush and some Airplane stripper is what I used. I got alomst every speck of paint off a wheel in a day. I even have GTA wheels. The stuff makes teh paint fall off. When used with a pressure washer, the time is cut in half. I got two wheels stripped in a day and a half with that stuff, the first day I was using it wrong. I highly recommend it.
Yeah .... I had the pink wheels also. I just sanded the pink part by hand, taped, and sprayed. The wheels turned out pretty nice but it has only been about 4 months since I did it so I can't be sure about long term satisfaction. However, I had a chip in the orginal paint that was down to the bare metal and I did nothing about it before I sprayed the wheel. It turns out that the new paint will stick to the old pink part WAY better than to bare metal. I would recommend priming, painting, and sanding any chips in the pink part before you paint the whole wheel.
I had the same pink paint on my 91 Z28 rims.
Some sanding w/ 400 grit sandpaper did the trick. I repainted my wheels red, which matches beautifully w/ the bright red body.I painted mine about 2 months ago and they still look great.

I appreciate all the comments. What I did:
Went to local hobby store and purchased one hug *** bottle of liquid latex and then wetsanded all the pink paint. Then I brushed on the latex onto the silver areas that I didn't want painted. Then simply taped newspaper around the outer edge of the wheel & tire where I didn't want paint and shot them with krylon enamel. They turned out AWESOME! Thanks evre1.
