junkyard find!

So, I was just waltzing around my local yard looking for a front bumper for my Intrepid and looking for one for my friends Grand Prix as well. So me and my friend started looking at some of the wrecked Mustangs (lol) when he wants to go look at his old car that he sent to the junkyard. So I asked if we could stroll through the GM cars that were on the way to the imports. We walk around when we come up onto this somewhat ragged 84 Z28. The outside was a little beat up and the stripped block was laying on the ground outside of the car. It was very highly optioned for the year (power seat and other little tidbits) when my eyes wander onto the dash pad. IT WAS IN PERFECT CONDITION!!!! I had to rub my eyes to make sure I was seeing right. My friend started to look at me wierd when my voice started to get a high pitched squeeking tone to it as I tried to explain how hard it is to find these. Long story short I pull it out and walk up to the front desk and ask the guy how much...I was prepared to atleast pay an arm for it when he looks at me and says "That'll be $16." I give him the money run out and shove it in the back seat of my Intrepid and carefully drive home. I have yet to polish it up and take pictures but I will soon!

I almost crapped my pants because this is the first good deal I have ever gotten. I just hope one day I can find another third gen for dirt cheap.

How did that baby oil work for you in the long run as far as a moisturizer? Is it better to use than leather conditioner?

Re: junkyard find!

Yea dash pads are inexpensive at yards here as well. $15+ $2 Enviromental fee+tax comes to around $21.

I have two Camaro pads in perfect condition in my room. Had a chance to get a perfect bnird one but passed on it since mine is uncracked. Sad thing is all were from beat up Rs or v6 birds. All the T/A and irocs and z28 usually have cracked pads.

Re: junkyard find!

Nice find. One of the plus sides of living in "sunny" Washington state is that the dash pads don't get near as pounded as in most other areas of the country. I've found 4 or 5 workable (one small crack) to perfect dash pads in the junk yards around here in the past couple years.

Re: junkyard find!

Unfortunatly the "Sunny" weather up there also brings alot of "Fun" plant life that grows in the interior to produce a "refreshing" smell, especially in t-top Camaros that always leak in the top left corner.

Re: junkyard find!

Some of you are real lucky when it comes to finding parts! Anyway here are some pics of it with just a wet paper cloth clean. I also included a picture of the table I made in my woods class for school!

Please excuse the mess lol.

Thanks Mac, I spent an entire semester putting that table together, quite a few hours went into putting the logo in on AutoCad.

That toe is crammed into a size 10 1/2 shoe...I'm sure that if I cut it off I would probably be able to get into a size 7. lol

Thanks for the (more or less) compliments!

Re: junkyard find!

Found a complete dual snorkel air cleaner this spring. Looked like they were ready to crush the car, had the inside piled full of parts. Took awhile digging thru everything but is was all there and the hoses were still in good shape!

Re: junkyard find!

Stupid question, I found a better looking dash pad in the jy, unfortunately for a firebird, thinking it would fit my camaro. Just noticed tonight thst it is missing the indent for the middle vents. Haven't started messing w/ it yet, but is there any chance it will work?

yeah if it is clean you can get a pretty penny for it. Clean her up and post her on this site if you cannot use it. I am sure someone on here need's one for a firebird. every clean one I find is for a firebird too. And I bought one and found out they are different! damn gm!

Re: junkyard find!

Thought it was too good to be true. Every camaro in the yard had the pad missing, that is, except for the destroyed ones. This Firebird pad isn't perfect, but was much better than mine. Has a crack on a corner, on the very edge on driver side. One speaker screen is busted, but I picked up another screen lying in another Firebird, though it needs to be glued together. Eh, only cost me $9. Easily made that up from the other parts I scavenged throughout the yard.

I know what you were getting at, don't worry. Hey those 145 mph speedos are pretty cool and valuable.
