Paint repair help needed.......

Well after several weeks of trying to get the red stripes on my 92 RS to look good again, I finally broke down and bought a new set threw Hawks.

The new stripes arrived on Friday, and I decide to pull the old stripes of on Saturday afternoon to begin to get it all cleaned up to put the new stripes on.

Every thing seemed to go very well with pulling the old stripes off, on the hood I noticed what looked like to small areas where the gray backing on the old stripes was left on the hood. After getting all the stripes pulled off, went back to remove those small gray areas. Well found out it wasn't gray backing from the stripes, but bare metal. The paint had actually came up when I was pulling off the stripes.......talk about not being to happy.

Well trying to fiqure out what would be the best way to repair these small areas. Once the stripes go back on the areas will be covered by the stripes again, but do not want to the them back down on bare metal.

Was thinking about taping the areas off and using some car paint in a spray can to put a couple of light coats over the areas, and then maybe doing a little wet sanding on those areas to smooth them back out, before putting the stripes back on.

Any advice from any of the painting exprets would be greatly appreciated.

This is the orginal Artic White paint on the car thats been on since it was bought new ('92), has never been repainted. This will also be the last set of vinyl stripes to go on it, when these go bad the entire car will finally get a new paint job with the stripes painted on, but do not have the money to do that right now.

Re: Paint repair help needed.......

Dont tape the area around it (same as when spot priming) as it will leave a hard line. Airbrushing would be the ideal solution. I dont have an airbrush, so I use a gravity feed with no cup. Then I mix paint with clear coat (as a single stage). Then put small amounts of paint manually into the gun and add small amounts of reducer until the desired flow (on the panel into existing paint) is achieved. You want to adjust the spray pattern extremly small on paper before trying to spray on the panel. You basically want a small "mist pattern" similar to an airbrush's spray pattern.

Edit: I use this repair method for buffing "burn through". I was sitting here thinking about it an realized that every repair I have had to make was to a vertical panel. For you situation you may have to use a cup to keep the paint from spilling when the gun is angled.

Re: Paint repair help needed.......

Thank's for the info camarotucker, after looking at it some more, I think the paint job is just so old that I will probably just have to have the entire car repainted. Going to just try to repair it a little to keep it from rusting until I can afford the paint job.
