a/c delete questions/pics

I have a 92 maro.. my ac in it is weak and it still has r 12. i was considering having it converted and recharged but i was thinking for looks it would be better for me to delete it. Since u never use it anyway... Do i have to send it to a shop to have the refrigerant reclaimed or can i just take it ( a/c) apart? I know that it still has presure in the system but not a lot.. i am sure i can do it myself just not famiar with a/c and how it works... I dont want to release the r12 into the atmospher. Any helpful suggestion or anybody thats done it themselves. please post pics if you can or tell me about how much a shop would charge to delete a/c i got a quote for 300 but that does not sound right to me.

Re: a/c delete questions/pics

I just disconnected all the electrics and unbolted everything a/c connected. Mine was empty but it's up to you if you vent it or take it to a shop. Technically it's a federal crime to vent it. The biggest issue is the engine compartment heater box and the a/c controls. You can get a non-ac box but most want about $100 for one. I'm modifying the existing a/c box and don't care about the redundant controls. But I keep the car mostly for auto-x not looks or correctness. Depends on what you want but it does make an work on the passenger side of the engine way easier. Good Luck.
