Is Mothers metal polish safe for my rims?

I tried a tiny dab of it and it removed the pesky little stain completely but I dont want to continue to use it if its going to damage my clear coat or something. Anybody know of a good product to use if this is no good?

The polish was abrasive enough to remove the stain, but it's intended purpose is use on bare metal. I've never used it on a clearcoated surface, but I'd guess it could dull the clearcoat if you went at it hardcore. Probably not so much if you calmly do small sections by hand. I'd use it to remove spots/stains, but if you want to clean up the clear coat, perhaps try hitting the wheels with rubbing compound followed by a polish. That would bring back the shine of the clearcoat better than metal polish. Really depends on how much work your wheels need.

I wouldn't use it on clearcoated rims for anything other than what you did. Before I polished my rims (and removed all the clear), I used to like paint polish, since that's essentially what the clear is anyway.

Yeah that definitely seems like a better option

Re: Is Mothers metal polish safe for my rims?

I have a tin of Blue Magic metal polish cream that says is good for chrome, aluminum, and mag wheels. I bought it to polish the chrome tips on my GTI, not to polish wheels. I think you need to be very careful when it comes to any wheel regardless if it is OEM, alloy, clear coat, or soft metal. Wheels cleaners can etch a wheel in no time if used improperly. Sonax Full Effect is supposedly a great wheel cleaner. At detailersdomain.com you can see how safe it is used on Audi A4 wheels.

Regarding the Mother's wheel polish remember, polish restores, wax preserves. And BTW rubbing compound is a polish, a heavy duty polish. I wouldn't put that any where near clear coat anything.

What color is the stain? If it's whitish or very light gray, it's possible the stain is under the clear coat. Moisture can get under the clear coat and corrode the aluminum. To get to that, you'll have to strip the clear coat off and polish with metal polish. Like the other guys have said, if the stain is on top of the clear coat, use a paint polish or rubbing compound, not metal polish . I've used 3M products with good results on paint and clear coat.
