Anyone with experience, especailly on car? If so, what was the preparation and product that you used?

I painted mine on the car. Basically I just cleaned them, masked the surrounding areas, and sprayed them with high-temp aluminum paint. I don't have any pics, but they look pretty sweet.

 

Yep, I used a wire brush to get all of the rust and crap off of them and sanded them down a bit in some spots to get em somewhat smooth. Then I cleaned them with some brake cleaner and sprayed them with about three coats of 1800* Duplicolor engine paint (semi-gloss black).

If you want to do it for looks, paint them any color that you want to. But I paint mine flat, or satin black, because it transfers heat better. As for preperation, you'll be fine making sure that there is no oil, or grease on them. Surface rust is no big deal, infact it makes the paint stick on better. You can use high temp paint, but you don't really need to. I use plain rustoleum on everything, except headers. Engines, mufflers, pipes, never had a problem.
