How do you get it off? If I can't leave it off I have to paint it. Thanks

You should be able to just remove the two large hex screws on the inside of the glass and it should pop right out. You may need to take the two screws on the top outside off as well but i dont think so. You can leave it off, but only if you want to have two good sized bolt holes in your hatch. Otherwise your either gonna have to replace the hatch, or possibly find some plugs for the holes.

im petty sure in some states though u have to have a third brake light. i know here in CT that you have to have one unless your car was made before 1986 but im not sure if thast the law everywhere.
