82 Sport Coupe to 83 Z28 Conversion
82 Sport Coupe to 83 Z28 Conversion
hi im new to this forum, im 17 and recently aquired 2 camaro's. I bought a 82 sport coupe (1 owner garaged, 118,000 origianal miles, v6 4 spd) and i traded my father my quad for his 1st car (83 z28, built up 355 5spd). unfortunatly the 83 had a freshly built engine put in in 2003, but was too rusty to inspect in 2004. so the engine was winterized and just sat in the car since 04. So currently the engine & trans is being pulled and the rest is getting junked due to being rusted to bits. we resurrected it this year and it runs perfect.

Now that i have the background story in place, i can get to my question. I hate the look of the 82, so i removed all the z28 parts from the 83 and im wondering how i should go about putting them on. The side skirts require a mounting strip, i cant seem to find them anywhere and im thinking ill have to torch them off the z28. And the rear strips that go behind the rear tires seem like theyll be annoying to put on. Is there a really good way to do this conversion? i have all the parts, i just want a complete z28 clone basically in the end, besides all the preformance goodies

Re: 82 Sport Coupe to 83 Z28 Conversion
I did the same thing to my 87 sport coupe, turned it into an 84 Z28. For the skirts behind the wheels I put a dab of grease on the tips of the bolts then eye balled where it should sit and touched it too the car (leaving a dot of grease where you need to drill) then drilled the holes in the quarter panel, mine was a tiny bit off so I made the holes bigger so I could slide it around a bit to line up. then when it was good I put the nuts on the back. it has never moved since. for the side skirts I welded four L shaped tabs on the rockers where the screw holes are and for the front (under the badge) I used sheet metal screws. for the back of the side skirts (behind doors in front of back wheel) I drilled holes in the skirts and sank sheet metal screws in then took them back out and I had a pilot hole then epoxyed bolts in the skirts and fiberglassed over them. then just put the nuts on from the inside. for the door pieces i drilled and sloted the holes and adjusted to fit.
Hope that makes sense, if not just ask. It really was quite easy just took some planning.

i think im going to just get all the z28 parts gathered up, take them aswell as my car to our local auto body guy, just pay him to install them(the right way) aswell as primer the whole thing, hopefully he's willing to tackle such a project
