Detailing a car today

I thought I'd use the Detailing section to discuss...........Detailing!

My neighbor has an '89 IROC with 37k miles on it. The Miami sun destroyed the paint back in the early 90s even though he waxed it regularly and tried taking care of it. Well, two years ago, we tore the car down and took it in for a repaint. After he got the car back, I polished it for him, but there was some areas that didn't really have the right shine and the clear needed to be sanded.

Welcome today! We washed the car and wet sanded with 2000 grit. All of the flaws were able to be removed with the 2000, but, some areas required a little additional sanding to get them right.

I pulled out my Flex buffer with the wool pad, used my old 3M Finesse It Rubbing Compound and buffed and buffed and buffed. The paint looked really good in the garage with bad lighting using only the rubbing compound, so we pulled it out to wash it and see all the compound swirl marks. The car looked good, but had the swirls that a dealer will give you on a black car when they buff em out.

Out came the Porter Cable polisher and the Meguiar's compound/polish. I can't remember what number it was, but it's their professional line of product. We went over the entire car with the polish and had the car looking like a million bucks. In all, six hours of sanding, buffing and polishing. The car looks fantastic. I will have to get new pictures up of the car, but these were taken after I polished it last time with bad looking clear. Oh, it was about 95* here and very humid today, so that didn't help!!!
