They sell covers or "night shades" paint that you can do yourself...
They may excite the local police, so be warned...

Re: Blacked Out Tail Lights?
Another option is to take them to a body shop and have them sprayed with a clearcoat that has a little bit of black in it to "tint" it. I've used night shades a lot with good success, but it seems like the clearcoated ones look a lot "deeper"...even with clearcoat applied over top of the NS. I plan to have mine done this way when the time comes.

Re: Blacked Out Tail Lights?
not the best pic but it shows what they look like. This was with VHT Nightshades. Haven't clear coated it yet, but it looked amazing after hitting it with some car wax.

Re: Blacked Out Tail Lights?

I did mine with VHT nightshade. The only thing is i took mine to get inspected and they wouldnt pass it. So i had to take some of it off, which is really hard. I couldnt find out how to properly do it. But I love the way it looks

Re: Blacked Out Tail Lights?
If you have to pass inspection, i would keep a set of completely stock tails as a backup. Luckily, not an issue in MI.

Re: Blacked Out Tail Lights?
I thought about that but i would need to find a really cheap pair of them, considering im off to college this year and need all the money i can get.

These are mine. I had a paint shop tint some clear and put it is a spray can. Tinted it to the way I liked it and then cleared over it until it looked wet, shiny and STOCK. I also have a set of regular ones in the garage in case I need to swap them for a 'fix it' ticket...
Did the 3rd brake light too...
The previous owner did the nightshades thing and it looked like crap by comparison...

Re: Blacked Out Tail Lights?
These were my first set I did back in 2002, I have a list of how many drops of black to mix for the tint I want for darker to lighter. I prefer the clear coat rather than the stuff in the can but thats just my opinion
The Yellow car was from 02 the first time I tried it, the single is from the car I am building now, just wanted a very light tint with a high shine

Both of those look great! You can get good results from NiteShades, but it's a little more work to get there. Can't wait until i get to the point where i can worry about the tail lights. LOL

Re: Blacked Out Tail Lights?
I installed these covers back in the late 90's because I liked the look and because the grid pattern inside the tail light lenses are shot...to me the covers are a bit dated and I want to go back to a stock tail light.

You might try to find a set of 1991-92 GTA Lights. They look dark, but that was the factory finish.

Re: Blacked Out Tail Lights?
Very clean 5.0ta! I had a set of GTO headlight covers and removed their decal for a little smoother look. Might look nice on your tails, since the white stands out to much against all the black on the car.

Re: Blacked Out Tail Lights?
Thanks!!!...I've decided to dump the covers and go back to stock untinted tail lights...I found a passenger side tail light at a body/repair shop for a decent price, it isn't perfect but after buffing and polishing it looks pretty good!...I'm the high bidder of a nice driver side on the evil auction site...just gotta sweat out 3 more days!

Re: Blacked Out Tail Lights?
Not sure I like the blacked out look. I was behind a ***** today with blacked out lenses and you could barely see the brake lights in the morning light. I'd be worried about someone trying to climb into my trunk because they couldn't see my brake lights. So good luck with them.
Re: Blacked Out Tail Lights?
I love blacked out tails. That being said the tails on a camaro look great as is. Im seriously debating blacking my IROCS tailights. I do mine by mixing black with clear base coat then clearing that.
My Yukon. Had to sand them off the headlights, was just to dark to see at night.

My sons first car I did.

I get the look...I just want to be able to see the lights and for mine to be seen. Maybe LEDs?

I'm a fan of VHT Niteshades. The tails and 3rd brake light on my truck are done in VHT and they look great-no clear at all.
