nasty aluminum

My aluminum valve covers, intake, oil pan and water pump have a white crust on them and everything is very dull. Anyone have a "best option" on restoring the luster? Thanks

Re: nasty aluminum

Simple, just takes a little elbow grease.

Sand it, then polish.

You will need to get probably some 200 grit or something, sand it down til it's dull but clean (no white, oxidized aluminum). Sand it at 400, then 600. Then polish either by hand or with a buffing pad. I've gone up to 1500 grit... didnt make any difference. If I were doing it again, I'd just stop at 600 and use a buffing pad.

Its aluminum and when it's bare it oxidizes ("rust"). But you can remove the oxidized layer and polish it to whatever finish you like. You can even leave it dull if you want.
