Build your own wing?

Anyone in here ever make their own wing?
My Aero wing is garbage. To get one up here new isn't possible from Hawks. And even if it were, by the time I pay for it, shipping, duties, prep and paint I'm looking at $1000+ to have just a stock wing.

So I figure why spend all that cash to have something stock?

I looked at aftermarket possibilites, and they are all way too tuner like, as I like the low sleek look of the car. But, I really would like one to be carbon. I have some experience doing fiberglass, and I've been around and worked on enough aircraft to actually be able to form a wing that might provide some down force without a crazy amount of drag... Plus I have a few contacts of guys who design and build their own planes, so they know a few things!

Figure I can take some aluminum to make the side supports that also have a style similar to the side portions of the aero wing, just not have them go so far forward. A simple wing formed with CF with an LED strip molded in for the 3rd brake light with a middle "support" to hide the LED wires.

Of course, right now this is all in the "plan in my head" stage, as I'm currently just working towards my LS swap. Body work will begin next late spring/early summer once I have the swap in and mostly finished.

OOPS... Can a mod move this to the body section for me??

Re: Build your own wing?

I'll upload some pics later for you, but I have made wings for friends using a hotwire foam cutter, pink foam from home depot, and fiberglass cloth and resin. When finished you have a high quality fiberglass piece, with the only difference being it was hand made instead of molded. If you didn't want to do the glass work yourself, you can make a wing out of the foam, and have a fabrication place do the glass work for you.

Awesome, I would love to see that.

There is a form of composite aircraft fab where closed cell foam is glued between two structural pieces (like say wing ribs) then a long sanding board is used to sand the foam down to match the shape of the structural pieces and then it is covered with fiberglass or carbon.

I assume this entire thing will be lighter than the stocker.
