I like the Quiksilver II wheel cleaner. Also use a cleaning brush. What I did to prevent brake dust from getting on the wheels, was I had my brother make some brake dust covers out of sheet metal and then I spray painted them black, can't even tell they're on the car. Works great.

Does the sheet metal cover your rotors? Sounds pretty cool to me. Got any pictures?

The covers, cover the entire inside circumference of the wheel. I can get you picks tomorrow. It's dark now, and I have to replace some brake pads anyways.

If you want pics of the covers off the wheels, let me know and I'll take some.

Don't they sell something like that somewhere? Some kind of cover to keep brake dust off the rims? It just seems like I've seen them on TV or in a store somewhere before...

I've seen covers on a Jimmy, but this was free for me, and honestly looks a little more hidden than the ones they sell.

You can also prevent your wheels from getting coated with brake dust by not buying the cheapest brake pads the parts store offers. The cheaper ones squeek a lot and leave a lot more brake dust.

OK... If your concerned with BRAKING, DO NOT but the inside wheel covers... heres why:

One night, im racin this mustang down rt.70 (local highway)... 1/8 of a mile ahead, the traffic light turns red... im doin 123mph with 3 other people in the car. I was STANDING on the brakes, and once i finally came to a stop AT THE LINE, a huge puff of smoke came from my brakes, and the smell of burning brake pads. These covers prohibit much need air from getting to, and cooling the brakes propperly. I almost found out the hard way.

Im just forewarnin yas, cause I dont wanna hear of any beautiful 3rd gens gettin wrecked cause they couldnt stop fast enough!

Just my $.02

Not to be rude, but think about what you just said. 123 mph with 3 other people. I doubt your covers were the problem. Any brakes having that amount of stress on them aren't going to perform the best.

And one nite I was doing about 110-115 and had to take a turn, I didn't slam on the brakes, but stopped a little more hard than normal, this was BEFORE the covers, and I smelled the brakes bad when I got out.

True, but im sure I could have stopped a bit faster if the brakes were breathing better than they were. Even if I stopped 10 feet less, 10 feet could mean the diff betweed slammin into an 18 wheeler, and stoppin!

Aren't 3rd gen brakes not supposed to be that great in the first place? Someday if I get the $$$ I plan on getting BAER Claw brakes. At LEAST some bigger 1LE rotors or something, and doing a disc brake conversion for the rear. Or might just get a whole new rear end w/ discs

...kind of off topic but wanted to bring it up after reading Hg's previous post... isn't it more or less pointless to put disc brakes on your rear wheels? Most of the braking is done in the front, so wouldnt it be better to spend money and upgrade your front ones instead of replacing the back ones?!?
