Hello all. Looking for a good quality cover for my Iroc. It is stored in a garage but I would like something to help keep the dust off and help protect against clumsy people passing by. It will not be used out in the great outdoors. Suggestions please.

 

There are a bunch of options out there, but if you have nice paint and want to keep it that way, I would look at Covercraft. http://www.covers4cars.com/

They are anywhere from $90-$300 depending on the type of cover you want.

 

Went to Goodwill, bought four sheets & wife sewed cover in a hour. Cost = $2.50.

got mine from walmart. i think it was cheap lol. its does have a pretty long warranty, i have gone through 2 so far and have been replaced by the manufacturer everytime, each time they were outside. first time it took about 2 years of abuse, second time it was outside and tropical storm Irene tore it a little, had the car outside when hurricane sandy came through, the cover fought the good fight but once 1 tear formed, it just parachute-ed and tore apart pretty well lol did its job though. now the one i have is on it while its in the garage

 

I have three cars and two protected spaces. One car garage, one new 14 gauge carport from Carolina Carports guaranteed against 130 mph wind. They offer an excellent value at $650-900 for 12' by 21', depending on how deluxe you want it. Looks great too. I bought the carport to keep from scraping ice off my Camaro and Mustang, as well as to protect from hail and etc. But last month I unexpectedly came across this 92 Formula, and now have more cars than good spaces. Ordered another carport so I can protect all three, but it wont be here for another month. I may need to invest in a simple tarp and some bungee cords til it gets here, because this cold weather has ice on everything. I HATE scraping ice of my windows and freezing my butt off every morning doing it--or at least on mornings I drive the one car thats not covered (whichever one it may be).

 

This may sound a little silly, but how does an average size person put one of these on w/o dragging on ground picking up dirt on inside of cover or risk additional scratching by piling on top of vehicle? I'm sure neighbors were laughing. I must have looked like the proverbial one-armed paper hanger!!! I gave up!! Suggestions? Thx in advance.

 

I start with it all on the hood and pull it over the nose and then carefully pull it to the back corners(starting on the back it tends to pull off). It doesn't have to drag the ground and if you don't do anything crazy then it shouldn't scratch your paint either, unless you have a really coarse cover or something.

 

I bought a cheap cover from wal mart for $22 to tide me over til my carport arrives, and I think its great. Fits right over like a fitted sheet with the elastic and etc around the bottom. Its "water resistant" the box says. I dont know about all that, but it sure as heck works wonders on ice and snow.

 

Just put it on like a bed sheet. If you can get one corner to grab a little, you can work it from there til you get it situated.

 

I started at furthest "point" out front. I'll take your advice and start from the corner like a bed sheet. If that doesn't work I might invest in one of those 4 ply Covercraft covers molded to fit over the mirrors and antenna. Thanks for the advice, folks.

 

lol i have the $22 dollar one i think (its gray colored) and it is not water resistant lol. i have to put a clear drop cloth under it. now that its in my garage i dont worry about it anymore though

 

I like that idea! The plastic dropcloths are inexpensive & would also minimize scratching! Thx RacerX520

 

I would avoid plastic, or tarps you want something that will breathe. There is a store called Meijer in my region that has cheepo car covers for around $40-$50... My only suggestion is do NOT get the size they recommend for our cars, get the large one... sure it is loose and floppy, but it is in the garage. the one that is supposed to "fit" barely covers the bumpers, I like it to go a little lower...

Thank you. I appreciate all the feedback I've gotten from everyone. Didn't expect so many responses, which leads to my following statement & request. I'm feeling a bit guilty for going off thread and hogging topic from cs80camaro. I think we should go back to their original topic. Cs80, my apologies. I'm new at these forums. I only hope that you were able to extract the cover options recommended to me, for yourself, also. To my friends who supplied the many "how to cover" options, thx again. Maybe I should start a separate thread, lol !

 

Quite easily matter of fact.

When you get your new cover it is rolled up,
0) If you have a fixed mast antenna, unscrew it, I lay mine on my wipers on the windshield.
1) Remove from bag
2) unroll it
3) unfold it to one side of the car
4) loop it on something like the mirror
5) walk to other side of car
6) unfold to opposite side
7) go to front of the car and loop it on the front bumper
8) Go to rear of car and loop it on the rear bumper
9) Work your way around and get it neat.

To fold up you may want to take it inside and have your wife help you, then stuff it back in the bag.

 

Yeah, once I get it hooked on something, should be easy. I'll play with it this weekend. Thx. Also caught a few helpful YouTube videos.

 

Not trying to insult anyone here, but never use something like a clear drop cloth or plastic on your car. It'll trap moisture as previously mentioned (that's part of what 'letting it breath means'). And, we all know what that'll lead too...even if stored in your garage, you aren't doing the paint any favor with plastic or something that won't breath.

True story-found a rare 76 Trans Am. Guy took me to look at it, it had plastic draped over it ( I cringed when I saw this). When I pulled the plastic away, most of the roof came with it. The rest of the top of the car was in the same condition. Needless to say, I passed on buying it. Extreme case, but you get the point. Don't think you want that to happen!

I too bought the Wally World Special, have an outdoor and indoor one, they have served me for over 10+yrs. Would love to have a real nice one, but mine works and does the job for me.

Yes, that is freakin' scary! Makes sense. Plastic is spastic! Stay away or there's a price to pay!! Point taken.Thx for input.

 

I only put the plastic on it while it was outside. otherwise the water would seep through the cover and leak through my t-tops. it was between having to cover it with a plastic drop cloth (not really my original intention when buying a car cover) or having to replace my interior again from my t-tops frequently leaking. since putting the car in the garage, i got rid of the drop cloth and also was able to fix (i think) the leaky t-tops.

 

Lesser of two evils. I get it. Based on all I've read here, it's worth it to get an indoor/outdoor, fitted, breathable, waterproof/resistant, 4 ply......and pray!! I'll probably opt for either the Covercraft Noah or Evolution. Because my baby deserves the best!

 

One of my cars came with an expensive "Hollywood" something or another cover and it looked like a nice cover. until you realized that the cover ruined the paint, the inside surface of the cover was a vinyl, the outside seemed like a nice cloth. All of the top surfaces where the cover touched the paint it is now messed up. I am pretty sure it was a rather expensive cover too.

 

jharrison5 suggested Covercraft in an earlier post. I did some research on those and others. Always check Amazon reviews for most things I buy (electronics, accessories, clothing, etc) even if not buying from them. An excellent, unbiased consumer source. Check out the Covercraft website for specific design details. I feel confident. Everyone has their favorites. And yes, it doesn't have to be expensive, as long as it does the trick. I'm basing my choice on research. Unfortunately, the one I like is expensive. The Autocraft I bought and had issues with quality and design, was the reason I started posting (see my original posts). It was mid-range at $65. It's not about cost, it's about quality. What do you have, okfoz? I'll check it out. Who knows, maybe I'll like it.....and save some bucks!!! i bought the California car cover super weave fits like a glove!!! my car is outside for now till i build a carport.had pleanty of snow and rain when i take the cover off to start her up looks like the day i waxed her real good cover...cost around 400 but worth it keeps her clean and dry

 

Thx for the input. I am east coast & caught in the "polar vortex" too! Nice to know it will hold up. My 3rd gen is inside with a tender. My 5th is in and out depending on what's in garage. That's the one that needs the cover. I'll look it up and check it out.
