Painting outside mirrors

Hello all:

My 91 Z28's outside mirrors are in need of a repainting. I know I should take them off the car, but do you recommend that I use some fine grit sandpaper, mask off the important parts, and repaint it myself? Or should I send it to a detail shop so that they can use a sandblaster and take care of it in that way?

I would like to spend less than $150 on this project, and doing it myself would be way under that. I have about $600 in tires to take care of in March, so I have put a limit on this expense. Also, if you know of a good paint shop in the Detroit Metro area, I would appreciate a recommendation.

Thanks.

Re: Painting outside mirrors

This is a perfect project for spray bombs (cans). Remove the mirrors (it's easy), sand off any imperfections, sand all paint just to remove shine (allows paint to bite better), mask off mirror, wipe with tack rag, spray paint. Use coat hangers or wire to hang them up for painting & drying. Should spend less than $50 even if you use the best of everything.

Sandblasting is probably overkill in this case. I think this is a good one for practicing yourself, especially if your car is a solid color and not a metallic. If you have absolutely no clue what you are doing, remove the mirrors, sand them yourself, and take them to a bodyshop to finish. Shouldn't cost too much, and if you have a common color, they might be able to fit them in while painting another car.

Thanks for your help guys. I have done some touch-ups on the car already (fake-vents on power blisters), and my car is all black. This should be a nice project to keep me occupied through the winter (I know it won't take that long) while the care sits in storage).

Thanks again.
