personally I can't stand a 2nd gen bird logo on a 3rd gen. The 3rd gen is a very 80s, angular design, and the 3rd gen logo fits it perfectly. Whereas the 2nd gen logo screams 70s.

 

Something else to consider is that the hood bird was not a stand alone visual cue. The '77 through '81 Trans Ams also had pinstriping or in the case of the Turbo, had a two tone paint that the Phoenix flowed into. They also had color coordinated parts like the headlight buckets or wheels that matched. The styling cues brought it all together. Just a hood bird might look out of place.
