Buying a 85 IROC
Buying a 85 IROC
Hello all!
I am new to this site.... I am buying a 85 IROC and had a quick question...
I had one new in 85 and now at 55 want another one for my 16 year old son.... The one I am looking at has Ziebart under coating... What are your thoughts?
The car has been in the South for the past 16 years and is very clean... only 20k miles too... My concern is that under the hood is just not very clean looking... how much does this hurt the cars value? If any?
Other than the under coating the car looks perfect...
Again just looking for some insight .
Thanks

Re: Buying a 85 IROC
It has a bad habit of delaminating and then providing a place for dirt and moisture to collect and sit right against the metal surface it was supposed to 'protect.' If the car had any of it's lifetime anywhere where road salt was used to treat ice/snow, that makes it much worse.
Before you buy that car, get it up on a lift and inspect every under-car surface with a small pick. If there's concealed rust damage, it'll then become apparent. Anyone who has worked on old, undercoated cars will have at least a couple of horror stories about what undercoat was hiding, and no doubt, some stories will relate some/all of the hidden damage being intentionally covered with undercoat.
Better to be safe than sorry.

On the underside of the car, you can use Gunk Engine degreaser gel. Spray it on, let it soak and pressure wash it off. In the engine compartment, I would be more careful due to the painted surfaces. It can be removed, but it will take some work.

I'd need a whole lot more pics, especially underneath as the other posters mentioned, , and the biggest detail you left out, the $ price $, before I'd be ready to share any thoughts.
As to other thoughts, I do think it'd have to be the "One in a million" 16 year old Son to be turned loose on such a car, hopefully your's IS that one......

Congratulations!! We all love pics, so post them up when you get time.
Does it have the LSC interior?
Have any pics of your first 85 you bought new?

Nice Find!. I am a little sentimental about the 85's.

Re: Buying a 85 IROC
The Ziebart is not a standard undercoat. Sort of a wax coating that is sprayed inside panels and under neath in normal rust areas. Pretty good stuff for many years but at this point it's probably way past it's time to be doing anything. Nice looking car and I'd guess a really good buy at a reasonable price. Red IROC with T-Tops is hard to beat.

If you want to get the undercoating off the car without damaging the paint underneath-- look into dry ice blasting. I don't know what part of the country you are from, but here is a company that manufactures the machinery-- they may have a listing of local shops that do it: https://www.coldjet.com/dry-ice-blas...e-preparation/
