How much should I pay for a 1992 RS 305 in GREAT shape?

102k miles, 305/automatic (not sure which) meticulously owned, original owner, metallic blue. How much should I pay? I am gonna look at it this weekend, what should I offer if I do at all?

blue book on it is like 3400-4500, or in the area....but what should I pay?

I wouldn't pay more than that. If it's been modified, the owner would probably want some of his investment back, so there might be some adjustment for that, but overall, they're cheap cars as is.

A little over 2 years ago, I bought my 90 RS(305, auto), with 104,000 miles and it was also in very good shape. I payed $3800. I guess that's basically the same deal because it's two years later and you're looking at one that's two years newer.

Don't use KBB.com. They are always way too high!!!

I used to sell cars and people would always use Kelly Blue Book as an argument of how much their trade was worth. They'd print it out with all the features and all that crap, then flash it in my face like their car was a gold mine.

Then my manager would bust out with the Kelly Blue Book value of the used car that we had on the lot and he'd say "Well if you want Blue Book price for your's, then we want it for ours."

It was always $1500 to $2000 higher than we had the car on the lot for!!!!!!! :sillylol:

Use www.edmunds.com They are much more realistic. They are very close to NADA values, and NADA is what the banks use to get an idea of 'loan value'.

Not that you're looking to borrow money for it, but if a bank uses that book for giving loans, then you know it's good. The bank ain't gonna give you more money than they have to.

Here are some prices from Edmund's

1992 Chevrolet Camaro 2 Dr RS Coupe
Prices for:...................Trade-In.....Private Party.......Dealer Retail
Base Price
(excludes options)....... $1,569..........$2,132...............$3,069

If you do the "Customized Appraisal", even in clean condition, the
highest 'Private Party' estimate is $2,489 That's without T-tops since you didn't say that the car had them.

It also depends where you live. Here in California low mileage Clean Thirdgens go for between $5000 and $8000 depending on how well they've been maintained. I bought my 91 RS from the original owner with 72000 original miles on it with T-Tops and 16" Z28 rims for $6800. The car was in excellent shape inside and out. I'll attach a recent picture. The Camaros that cost around $3500 here are usually high mileage junk.

I bought mine in February of 2000 from the 2nd owner. He cried when we signed the papers. He had to sell it for money cause he was getting a divorce, he had no choice. It had 80000 miles on it and it was in like new condition. He was asking $7500 but we got him down to $6900. All the ones I looked at (and I looked ALOT) that were in the $3500 either had ALOT of miles or needed ALOT of attention (body, paint, interior....) It's easier to go ahead and spend more for the better car. Good luck!

thats sounds about right. I paid $6400 for a 88 305 TPI w/28,300 miles on it about a month ago. almost excellent condition. interior is perfect but it has the original paint and while it looks good, after close inspection you can see some small defects.

89 or older

I bought a 92 RS (109,000mi) about 9 months ago and i paid $4800 for it. Don't make the same mistake i did, get something older so that you dont have to deal with that computer crap unless its TPI. Buy a sport coupe or something for about $1500 and spent the extra 3 grand on a bad-*** drivetrain, honesty, i think that TBI just kinda sucks anyway.

Nic.
It's not the TBI that sucks. It's what it's sitting on top of that sucks. The 305TBI has some of the worst heads ever made by GM. The intake manifold is kinda weak too. On top of that you have a very restrictive exhaust system. But TBI is very easy and very cheap to mod, and they can be made to go fast. One guy here went 13.18 on stock heads and cam and another guy is hoping for 12.8 when the track opens back up. $2000 in parts will put a 305TBI car into the low 13s. Do a search for posts by NJ SPEEDER, he's always willing to help.

you make a good point

i understand your point about the TBI thing, i thought about what i said about it after i posted that and i agree with what you said!! The heads, intake, and exhaust do kinda suck. the tbi is good but i thing they need to make an aftermarket 590cfm like they do for the 86-89 pickups. I think that a set of vortec cast iron heads (the alum ones are cool but i'm 16 and on a budget, oh yea, i'm currently jobless...damn), a compucam .423 lift, 264* duration, and a good set of 1 5/8'' headers and 3 1/2'' exhaust might do good for a mid 13's car.

I say go for the Holley 670 CFM TBI unit and a LT1 cam (you can pick up one used for $30-50!). Also get a 3.42 posi reared (this can be done for $200). Then you need suspension, you could box your stock pieces for just a few dollars. Like I said, TBI cars are really cheap to modify (but not without a job though! I'm in the same boat)

I did some research on the 670 cfm throttle body from holley, it won't work with the stock elecronics in our cars. you'll need the computer out of a late 80's chevy pickup w/ tbi, that would be possible but tough to do.

Man those are some high prices!! here in Greenville perfect thirdgens go for 5000 max. I'm talkin about 40000 orig. mile cars with perfect bodies. I got mine from a police auction for 1800. After I threw a rod in the 305 I bought a GM crate engine and modified It a little. I've spent about $7500 on the car and that includes everything in the sig and the alarm system (and stereo system). Third gens are EVERYWHERE down here. My friend just bought an 87 IROC with 63000 miles, perfect black paint and body, for $4200!!!! You can get 94/95 Z28s down here for $6800 with no more than 120000 on em.
