I'm assuming you mean the air dam, I'd highly recommend you not take that off. Over heating will only happen soon after.

In this pic, look under the GFX running along the side of the car. You'll see a faint line running between the front and rear wheel wells. It's made of metal and hangs roughly 2 inches down. I have asked before and got no answer, Perhaps now someone can tell us the purpose of the skirt...

Honestly, I thought it was like a curb or speed bump warning device. I thought when you go over a big bump, that this skirt would crape and let you know you're getting very close to damaging your car.
Then again, your exhaust hitting the bump is a good indication that bad thing are about to happen too, so I dunno!

They should be plastic, and they were put there by the factory to help hide the exhaust and underside from what I can tell. Might have a slight aerodynamic effect. I purchased them when I bought my TA gfx new back in '89, but didn't like them, and never installed them. No one has ever said my Camaro has looked weird without them.

My Trans Am has them but i took them off.... I think its just to hide the exhaust really.....there are a couple of notches in them in the front and the rear and where those notches are is where you are supposed to jack the car up on its side.(But if you have a floor jack you don't have to worry about it!)

Mine are of the flexible type, one function might be to work in conjunction with the front skirt, moving air from the front around to the sides. This decreases the drag considerably as air passing underneath the car slows it down. Could this be a PMD exclusive ?

4th gen camaros have them, but not the thirdgens. My 89 Firebird has them too. The are the also to push air up into the engine bay and radiator to keep the engine nice and cool. I like how they look too.

Sorry mav, you are thinking about the front air dam which all thirdgens got. The parts we are talking about are along the side of the car underneath (the length of the side gfx, under the doors). No where near the engine compartment.
