door handles

I have the stock black door handles on my 91Z, i was thinking of ditching them for some chrome ones off an old gmc truck, i was thinking they would go well with my torque thrusts, what do ya think ???

that would look kinda sweet....as long as the doohandles dont say GMC on em LOL. or you can always go with the option of saving the doors, if you have the money. IT LOOKS SO SWEET ON THIRDGENS!

Ok, I dont know if he meant shaving the door handles but, that would look kind of cool. I have seen that on a couple of third gens. and it is hardly noticible, but cool when you do notice it.

As far as the chrome door handles, I dont know. Buty them, they cant be that exspensive, put them on, if you dont like them, take them off and put the originals back on.

Another option, paint the handles body color. I personally like how these blend in with the car:

i myself was thinkin somethin along the same lines. i'm waiting for dad's GMC to die so i can grab the recessed handles and 350 I think they would look a lot nicer than the giant block of a handle we've got now. for the time being, i touched them up cause they were scratched up from over the years.

there used to be a guy on the boards that used S10 handles. He painted them the color and they are flush mount style. I wish I still had the pic. good alternative since shaved handles are illegal and not an easy fix back to legal.

haved door handles means you have no handles on the outside of the door. you have to use a remote with door poppers that open the doors. I believe they are illegal in most states but they look great. catch 22. do a search and you will find info.

lets just say the shaved door handles wont come into question if you never plan to sell the car or have to get it safety inspected in VA. Other than that you should be fine... tint/blackouts are illegal but people have them and dont get bothered. Just expensive to reverse

Hey 91Z28 ! stick with the black handlesl. They go good with the black strips. You must keep them man! If anything get some that have a Red Bow tie on them. Personally I want the ones that say Formula on them.

What do shaved door handles cost and what kind of shop can put them on? Does the door swing open all the way or just enough to get your fingers under it to pull it open? Also, what do you do if your remote breaks? Could I get some pics or mabye a video showing them in action?

Mikes86SC, do you have a pic of the entire car? I am repainting my car this summer and might do what you have done with the handles. Doug

1. I think my friend got his kit for about $150, but prices can range from about 100-800. I believe basically any type of body shop can do that type of work if you know the right people installation can be cheap too (100-200 bucks)....even if you have a little experience in auto body repair you could even do it yourself (assuming you have all the proper tools)
2. If your kit is brand new, the door is going to pop open more than it will when your solenoids are a year old (if they even last that long)....if the kit is new then the door should pop open enough to where you can grab the window and open the door all the way (the higher power solenoids you get, the more your door will open, and camaros and firebirds are graced with a heavy door so you will probably need a higher power soleniod than normal) and yes, soleniods do fail and if they do or your remote breaks, when you get the kit installed, the kit comes with a safety door open button, mounted to a place outside your car somewhere so if your crap breaks, you push the button and MAGIC, your doors open. you could always keep a key to your hatch too, but sometimes that gets messy.

Some poppers are stronger than others...mine(15lb solenoids) pop it open just enough (you wouldn't want it to smack your door into another car). You could probably mount the door poppers yourself (VPA...Summit sells them), but like any other mod of this type, it takes a little time and effort.

Any good body shop could do the work to actually fill the handles and lock cylinders, but if you are decent with a MIG (like my boyfriend's dad), you could do that part yourself. You just cut patches from automotive grade steel to fit in the recesses, tack them in place, then gradually weld them solid, being careful not to overheat and warp the panel. Grind the welds with a small body grinder, skim it with filler (it shouldn't take very much if the welding is good), prime, and paint.

You might want to wire in a hidden switch in case the remote for the poppers dies, otherwise you'll have to get in through the hatch. Its true that it isn't NHRA legal, but it does give the car a clean look. You should check local laws, but I doubt its illegal most places (it isn't in GA). If you want pics, there are a few on my site.

Shaved handles are illegal and won't pass tech? Why are cars like the Dodge Viper exempt from this?

I routed the filler neck up thru the fender well. I get to it thru the cargo box in the trunk. I took out the cardboard cargo box a while back. It was a pain in the butt to do, but it looks great.

As far as filling the hole. My boyfriends dad cut a piece of sheet metal just a shade smaller than the hole and welded it little by little. You have to go slow or you heat up the surounding metal and it will warp. After the piece it welded in. You grind down any high spots. He used some fiberglass filler (bondo hair) then sanded. Then on to a very light coat of bondo. Then primed it and sanded, primed, sanded. Then we took it to a body man to finish it up and paint the section.
