Bumper Paint

Hey,
I need a little help here. The previous owner of my car had it repainted but the rear bumper was not. Not quite sure how this came to be though. The rest of the car's paint is alright but the bumper looks like crap. I want to repaint it myself but I'm not sure what all needs to be done. Obviously it needs to be preped, repainted, and then clearcoated. If some one could give me some advice on the steps I need to take I'd appreciate it.
Thanks
David

1. Remove the bumper cover

The bumper is one of the "urethanes"... for specifics
look on the underside for a symbol that will tell you what
it is.

2. Find your local jobber supply store and tell them what you
want to do. They obviously will be suggesting you use whatever they sell. PPG, Dupont et.al. all make fine products

What you are going to use is one of the catalyzed urethane
paints. Mostly these work pretty well but you really have to
stay in the same family of products. That is if you choose the
PPG Chroma System, you use their reducer, primer, pigment
catalyst, urethane and hardener.

While your there pick up the technical product description
and the application notes. They will be happy to give you a quote
provided you don't show up monday morning when their real
customers are there. Try a Tuesday or Wednesday as they will
have a little extra time to spend

Sooo...
Once you pick a family stay in it until you finish the job

1. Remember to use a stripper that is safe for the plastic
you found out about in step one

2. Catalyzed paints are murderous
Use with a filtered remote supply. Even outside this can be
risky business.

3. HVLP guns are not too expensive

4. Pay attention to wind and weather

Have fun...
