Body sanding Question!

Hey guys I got and '87 bird and I'm currently takin it down to the sheet metal and I'm using an orbital sander for all the places I can.
My question is in what stages should the sanding go.
Let's say (Grit) 40,120,180,300,then prime and scotch brite it.
I'm just wondering cause I've never done body work on a black car and it has to be good.
please give me some input.
Thanks

I know a few Body shop guys that use nothing but 60 Grit to bring it down....

Of course, that's a lot of different areas, but I suppose it should work fine enough...

If there's any rust I'd recommend 60 myself, I've had great results, and I live at the Beach, so We've got plenty of rust to go around...

I haven't taken an entire car down to the sheet metal at one point in time... I'm soon to do so, though... Hope it helps...

Personally, I use a chemical paint stripper. The stuff is expensive but fast. Very messy but leaves no swirls. I have done both and that is my preferred way. You will find alot of people that don't agree with me on that one. But alot of people that do also. If I am going all the way down to the metal this is the only time I use it however.
