Painting car

I will be getting my car painted in the next month or so. Currently my paint is peeling off in sheets, the worse place is the hood. I guess this is a common problem in GM cars of this vintage My question is what if any special prep do I or the shop have to do to keep the paint from peeling off again. Do I have to take the car down to bare metal, or have some type of sealer applied? Or just sand and paint. Need some help so I get a long lasting paint job, that won't peel off the first time I wash it

I'd recommend doing a search on paint jobs, you'll find plenty of results I'm sure...

You'll most likely have all the info and more than you need.

Bad paint blues

A lot of the third gen cars built in Van Nuys used an early verison of a water based paint, and frankly, it falls off. The worst is the clearcoat.

The primer/Sealer put on at the factory is fine. The paint is marginal, and the clearcoat will have to go. Don't go back to metal, leave the original primer. if the color coat is not peeling badly, you can leave that, too. But you will have to either peel off or sand off the clearcoat. Use a good quality paint to go over it, and you will be fine.

Good luck. Post a photo when it's done!!
