steering wheel REALLY LOOSE

ok guys heres the deal my steering wheel is so loose you can take the column and move it around in a circle. ITS NOT THE WHOLE COLUMN. the whole thing doesnt move, just were you would normally be able to tilt it. You can puch it up about 3 inches, and move it side to side about 1. its really irritating and im worried that my wheel is going to fall off. is something broken or do i just need to tighten something up? thanks

I dont know of the possiblilities of this, but if your column does not move, but the rod inside of is does, sounds to me like a bearing or something fell out of place and is not holding the stering rod where its supposed to be, take off the wheel and check to see if anything looks out of place

mine was just like that and there is a tech article on this site I followed. It works fine now, but I had the same problem. It was just a few loose bolts that is common on thirdgens.

I have this problem too. I removed the shroud and can see.....not a lot.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't third gen columns have some kind of collapsing mechanism which folded the column on impact? I may be wrong about that, but after making enquiries about it that's what I was told, and I found a repair kit for it. Not fitted it yet though!

I just fixed this on my GTA over the weekend. There are 4 reverse-torx bolts at the base of the tilted portion that come loose. I'd never been into a steering column before so it took me forever, but as long as you put the stuff in order as you remove it, you can put it back fairly effortlessly. Getting the ring off that holds the column lock plate into place, then pulling the pivot pins are the two most difficult parts of the removal.
